It is especially suited for evangelism committees and adult classes. It attempts to present an approach to the practice of evangelism which is consistent with our theology and character as Moravians. “Yes, we need to do evangelism, but not ‘that’ kind of evangelism….” This is a sentiment a number of members have expressed. We know that we need to share our faith, but as Moravians we are not comfortable with tents, tracts, and television. Much damage is done to the cause of Christ by internal conflict over authority and submission issues, especially in the North American Protestant sending faith mission boards. This thesis seeks to lay out a beginning working biblical theology of followership. Its conclusion is that Christian believers are called more to followership than leadership and a proper understanding of submission and obedience can aid greatly in the worldwide spread of the gospel. The thesis argues that the development and implementation of a biblical theology of submission and obedience will result in healthier, more sustaining, and effective missionaries and ministries. To illustrate such a statement, it will look at the early Society of Jesus under St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Moravian Brethren at Herrnhut under Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf. Each will be explored as to their history, missionary movement and effectiveness, early documents, and spiritual practices. The images of God are discussed in light of the early history of this movement.  Traditional criticism of this movement finds it superficial and a means of control used by threatened overlords. Contextual and institutional factors are compared in the two groups of churches.  Chi-square and t-tests suggest twenty-two significant differences between growing and declining churches. Using historical research, the author discovered the 'gentle persuasion' concept of Moravian evangelism from the eighteenth century.  The author reported his findings in an evangelism guide for congregations called 'The Moravian Way of Evangelism.'  The guide was field-tested in ten congregations.
