Should psychotherapy be conducted with parishioners?  Can psychotherapy be effective?  This project examines these issues using investigative research and systematic analysis. Psychotherapeutic principles criticize methods that compromise boundaries.  In the parochial setting dual role relationships and symbiotic drives compromise the therapist's anonymity and neutrality. The project argues that these dynamics become opportunities for interpretation and analysis.  The project proposes strategies and parameters to aid the psychotherapeutic process. The most likely occurrence of this type of relationship develops in the counseling setting.  Pastoral counselors must understand the damaging effects of becoming romantically or sexually involved with a counselee. One hundred and twelve United Methodist Church members listened to a simulated counseling session.  Positive and negative responses were measured by the Counselor Evaluation Scale developed for this project.  Religious subjects reported higher positive and lower negative reactions when they believed the counselor to be a United Methodist minister or a Christian pastoral counselor than when they believed the counselor was a psychotherapist, but no difference was discovered between the ratings for the minister and the pastoral counselor. The study employed a retrospective analysis of demographic and diagnostic data on treatment records from 112 patients who received individual treatment at the agency in 1986. Thirty-two percent of referrals were from pastors, most of whom were from mainline Protestant denominations. Marital complaints were cited most often among patients. Chi-Square analyses indicated patients referred by pastors were no different than those from other sources. A survey questionnaire was adminsitered to clients in two separate congregations.  The questionnaire sought to determine whether there were any changes in the long term working relationship betweens the pastors and the clients. A case study was also presented.  The results were largely positive.  Any negative effect was seen only in one client out of sixteen, and that client was still in counseling. The paper found that an aspect of the counselor's identity which is not well developed has an adverse influence on the counseling relationship.  An aspect of the counselor's identity which is mature has a positive influence on the relationship.
