The differences exist between young children under about age 7, children from around 7 to 11, teenagers who have the adult tools for mature listening comprehension, and more mature adult listeners. This paper examines how preachers in intergenerational worship services preach intentionally to all generations without sacrificing the essentials of expository Christ-centered preaching. It also includes segments on pitfalls to avoid and suggestions for obtaining and using feedback. By surveying sermons given by preachers in the New Testament, modern literature on the subject of preaching, and personal interviews with eight seasoned preaching pastors, the conclusion was reached that a preacher's perceived primary role does not affect their starting point in preaching. The praxis director initiated this praxis in an effort to increase the members' awareness of the functions of the Holy Spirit in preaching and sermon listening, and the benefits gained from understanding and articulating those functions. It develops an argument for the need for greater theological reflection on the vocation of preaching for modern preachers.  It does so by outlining current challenges in homiletical education and ecclesial calls for greater vocational formation for preachers.  It suggests that the writings of Humbert of Romans, in his work The Treatise on Preaching, can help modern preachers gain deeper vocational awareness. Chapter two introduces the general cultural context of the thirteenth century.  It discusses the emergence of the two great mendicant orders the Dominicans and the Franciscans.  It sets into context the life and ministry of Humbert of Romans, the fifth Master General of the Dominican Order and offers a theological analysis of Section One of The Treatise on Preaching. Chapter three introduces a 'dialogue partner' to set alongside the Humbert material. The goal of the dialogue partner was to appropriately apply the material in a practical and contemporary setting.  The chapter does this by way of curriculum development and pastoral practice.  Theories of adult learning are explored and a retreat curriculum is developed that enables the Humbert material to be considered by preachers in a spiritual and educational setting.Chapter four explains a methodology for determining the effectiveness of the retreat for vocational awareness and examines the feedback from participants. Feedback included written questionnaires, video assessment and field observation.  This feedback is used to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the retreat in achieving the goals and outcomes outlined in chapter three. Chapter five offers a review of the entirety of the project based on Scripture verses about preaching which framed the content of each chapter. It is God's intention to see his followers transformed into the image of his Son. One of the methods he has chosen to use to realize this spiritual life-change is the preaching of his Word. But preachers have to make sure they are committed to life-changing sermons and not merely an informational exchange. Sermons are meant to bring transformation, not simply inform people of what a biblical text is saying. To determine how to preach such sermons the theological issues of the Law, salvation, sanctification and biblical preaching were considered.  The preaching styles and convictions of Bryan Chapell, Tim Keller, Andy Stanley and Rick Warren were also examined and evaluated. The biblical grounding considers Paul's speech at the Areopagus (Acts 17:16-34). Niebuhr's Christ and culture is the basis for cultural context. The church's history, Paul's ministry, and technological advancements such as language, architecture and cultural practices helped enable proclamation of the Gospel. Literature should be considered as a resource for preaching and observations are made about literature's use in preaching within two congregational settings -- a structured group versus casual interaction.
