These lay leaders are required to go through a course of education prior to assuming their office. The exact nature of that training is not made explicit in the church's constitution, so it is left to each congregation to discern a program that will prepare their ruling elders for faithful service. This mandated moment is an opportunity for positive spiritual growth. But many of the approaches to this task have relied on a heavily didactic method that focuses on transferring information, rather than a devotional method which focuses on spiritual formation. What is offered here is entitled 'Prayerful preparation: Elder education as spiritual formation.' This thesis explains the need and the theological implications of pursuing and implementing. It proposes and tests a model for a dismissal process and then evaluates that model. The model proposed consists of a four stage process: discernment, negotiation, dismissal, and reception. The thesis includes a case study on congregational anxiety using three congregations, one entering a discernment process, one amidst a discernment process and a third two years after being Membership decline has been steady and unrelenting. Yet, for a few more years, members remain who can remember a time when this branch of God's Church was vibrant and healthy. Art, in most forms, has been an underutilized resource in the Reformed Tradition. This project was an attempt to explore one approach to using art in the church in an effort to stimulate memory for the purpose of discovering ways that the church might recover its sense of health and vitality. Through this ministry tool, photography was employed to create a communal project that took the form of an exhibition within a local church. A questionnaire was then used to sample the responses of viewers of this exhibit. These responses revealed a wealth of memories and experiences. Although the congregation decided not to reinstitute the office of deacon at this time, significant learning and growth in perspective occurred concerning the nature of change in small congregations. Respondents to a written questionnaire participated in the placement process at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia between 1991 and 1994.  Results indicate that most of the women experienced pain or discriminatory practices during their search for permanent placement. Parameters placed on the search process negatively affected the candidate's ability to find placement, and also their perception of the process.
