A university-oriented church is an intergenerational congregation that chooses to be close to a major college or university community, including physically, socially, culturally, and spiritually, and actively engages that community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The author completed a series of interviews with leaders of churches around the United States that are focused on secular university communities. Since then, changes in society, religion and the university itself have created a far different cultural setting for university congregations.  Through a survey of American Baptist university churches and case studies of two congregations, mission and identity in the university church are explored.  Churches studied exhibited a strong sense of identity, strong connections with the community, strong connections between faith and learning, 'spiritual balance,' and were reappropriating the church's tradition for the present day. It is a ministerial tool used to address the lack of Bible study curriculum for college and university students.  The theological framework is provided by validating the ecclesial nature of campus ministry, which is the context for the ministerial tool, and by examining the role of biblical narrative.  The linkage to story is done by examining some different contexts in which story plays a role.  This served to develop paradigms for the Bible studies. Three ministries played equal parts in planning and hosting three cooperative events in one semester.  Simultaneously, each ministry carried out its regular activities.  Pre-test and post-test evaluations, exit interviews, and overall participation showed that cooperation is possible.
