Mental health providers are developing treatment plans.  Yet chaplains and other faith leaders also specialize in guilt, shame, and forgiveness.  The writer proposed that veterans--through a series of small group meetings--could learn more about God's love, acceptance, and forgiveness, and as a result begin to forgive themselves. The project helped traumatized veterans who experienced posttraumatic stress disorder and moral injury for whom other forms of therapy had not worked. Methods used were cognitive behavioral therapy and prolonged exposure therapy, in the context of a 12-week couples therapy group. Results were resolution of traumatization and forgiveness. The author proposes a biblical, Christ-centered approach for understanding PSTD and finding healing. Biblical templates challenge traditional psychological interventions and pose the possibility of new constructs for understanding trauma. The author developed and administered a 23-item questionnaire to 165 recent combat veterans and conducted 30 interviews of soldiers who have served in either Iraq or Afghanistan. The Fort Dix Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) Action Plan assists soldiers in strengthening their personal resilience and enhancing their recovery through a proactive educational approach that addresses the whole person, including the spiritual dimension.  It provides a structure that encourages soldiers to reflect on their values, define their goals, identify and participate in activities that enhance recovery and begin their transition either back to their units or into civilian life. The thesis uses literature dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, narratives about the war and its aftermath, biblical exegetical material on the language of service, theological writings and personal interviews with eight combat veterans of the Vietnam War. Virtually all of the veterans were engaged in service for their own healing. The study examined combat experiences, vocational choices, depth relationships, and current ministry settings.  Results showed strong relationship between encounters with death or shattering of values and decisions to enter ministry. Results showed strong relational stability and hearing of posttraumatic stress disorder. Results indicate failure of seminaries to assist incoming students in task of integrating combat experience and religious vocation.
