The objective of this project was to determine if compassionate spiritual, emotional, and practical assistance to widows during the critical bereavement period would be helpful. The methodology selected for the model included a questionnaire, interviews, observations, and feedback. A pro-active / qualitative research design was used for this project. In our high tech society the evangelical church has neglected the care of widows by relegating much of its responsibility to secular agencies. This project is a summons to the church to return to the biblical priority of caring for widows in practical ways. Using personal interviews, surveys, statistical analysis, as well as traditional methods of research, the author sought to determine exactly how serious the problem of neglect toward widows is, what their needs are, and how the church might begin a viable ministry to address these needs. This dissertation provides a theoretical examination of these issues, including the biblical treatment of widows, sexuality and intimacy, age, and the place of widows in the church.  A group of women, most of whom are widows, examined these issues.  Following their consideration of these issues, this group designed and developed an ongoing ministry program with widows.  The process used to examine these issues and develop the ministry program is described in this dissertation.
