This spirituality is grounded in a consistent ethic of life that respects the inherent dignity of all persons. Statements against women's ordination have been made out of fearful reaction to decisions of the Episcopal Church. Using the Whitehead method, the author studies the experience of Episcopalians and the tradition of the Catholic Church, bringing these elements into conversation with aspects of democratic and clerical cultures. Over a three year period efforts were made to explore biblical stories concerning women with a group of women in a small rural parish.  Methods included Bible study, retreat days, Sunday preaching, and use of scripture in pastoral counseling. Periodic evaluation and shared reflections were used as indicators of growth. They were 70 to 80 years old and were nuns for 50+ years.  Three pastoral strategies were developed from the data.  Grounded theory principles were utilized in data analysis. The subjects of the study were nine sisters who participated in intensive interviews, 45 sisters who responded to an anonymous questionnaire distributed to a random sample of one hundred, and one sister who was in therapy for nearly one year.  The findings provide information about the barriers Catholic women religious face in their ministry toward women who have had an abortion.  Attention is given to some of the areas of conflict that may widen the gap between the service which Catholic women religious feel mandated to provide and the actual care received by women who have had an abortion. This research exposes systematic patterns of exclusion which have resulted in a subordinate position for women within the Roman Catholic Church.
