Noting the contemporary social phenomenon of people being able to articulate a rather well-defined religious faith while having no involvement in a congregation, the author surveyed current and historical literature regarding popular religion, denominational boundaries, the faith expression of Americans, and Lutheran theology. The author analyzed Korn's high holiday sermons, which are found in the archives of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel (Elkins Park, Pennsylvania).  Also, the writer researched Korn's life by studying his personal papers and interviewing friends and family members to draft a short biographical essay.  Korn's life and high holiday sermons provide a wealth of information which can guide future generations of clergy to successful personal and professional existences.  Korn, a national religious leader, a highly successful congregational rabbi, an accomplished historian, a high ranking naval chaplain, and a dynamic preacher, countered his clerical and intellectual accomplishments with an equally troubled personal life. Through use of a questionnaire, scores in six facets of baptismal theology (christological, soteriological, ethical, eschatological, sociological, and ecumenical) were compiled for the parish.  The relative strengths of these facets in descending order were: ecumenical, christological, ethical, sociological, eschatological, and soteriological. In Chapter 1, the author has explored the biblio-theological context of the problem, examining an overview of Yoruba culture and religious concepts.  The review of precedent research literature in cultural anthropology and cultural ceremonies mostly related to the 'rites of passage' which have to do with elemental symbolism used in these family ceremonies are in Chapter 2. A definition of the research search strategy, implementation, analysis, and reporting of data are focused in Chapter 3.  An opinion poll, reported in Chapter 4, was conducted among Yoruba Christians resident in selected U.S. cities, to determine prevailing trends in cultural inclination towards or away from syncretization.  Of all respondents, 60.75 percent are opposed to syncretizing of culture-related worship. In looking to the future, this paper outlines approaches to getting the congregation on track for the future. Twelve participants were selected from the South English Street Church of Christ (Greensboro, North Carolina). It met for eight weeks reading and discussing material dealing with racism, Black rage, Christian spirituality, leadership, the Black church, and White Christianity.  The group experienced increased understanding of the spiritual and social ills afflicting Black men.  The participants felt closer to one another and spiritually stronger.
