He also interviewed many pastors and parishioners of African-American Baptist congregations, including some who were neither Black nor Baptist.  The author produced a workbook which is particularly designed for pastors and parishioners of African-American Baptist congregations.  The workbook was refined after being submitted to certain pastors and professors for a critical evaluation and after discussion by certain Black parishioners in a workshop setting.  The author devised four chapters: Leadership: its concept; Origin of leadership styles; Diversity of leadership styles; and Implementing leadership styles. Reading this dissertation/project, pastors can have a better understanding of their role as a leader and parishioners can have a better understanding of their pastor as a leader and themselves as followers. The specific objective was to develop and implement a philosophy that would function effectively among congregants who are predisposed to either a more traditional (in this case, Nazarene) worship style or a more contemporary worship style. Chapter 5 presents results of questionnaires and interviews. Two chronic problems are dysfunctionality of the church and marginalization of immigrants.  Chapter 6 proposes the contextual christological model. While not all Reserve/Guard chaplains pastor congregations, those who do are subject to special tensions.  The reserve chaplain faces both philosophical and functional role expectations that come from a variety of sources: the military, the civilian congregation served by the chaplain, the chaplain's endorsing agency, and the ever-present realization that if mobilized he or she would have to leave his/her civilian congregation to be with and minister to Reserve soldiers.  A research questionnaire was developed by the author to identify tensions resulting from the dual role ministry. This paper records what happened when the author added extra music, stories and objects one at a time to the sermon delivery.  One week later listeners filled out questionnaires. The responses to sermons delivered without the extra element were compared to the responses of sermons delivered without the extra element. Percentages, t-tests for independent means, and correlation coefficients examined the relationship between perceptions regarding Appalachian culture of church members and pastors at the .05 significance level.  All, but one, of the cultural clusters indicates cultural gaps. Sermon discussion groups, interviews, and journal writing were used to uncover what is helpful and what is not helpful when preaching among people who are not connected by common history or tradition, nor by ties of friendship of family.
