Failure to grasp and appreciate these can create unnecessary barriers to meaningful ministry.  This project chiefly used questionnaires to study attributes of divorced members and pastors and ascertain differences in perceptions and propose ways to build bridges to the divorced.  Perceptions do differ as to the impact of internal and external factors influencing divorced decisions and actions.  Successful ministry to the divorced must take into consideration these emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions. All leaders indicated improved ability to work with groups and in other settings as self-differentiated persons, though some wanted to understand the concepts more completely. Ministry that affirms racial identity, self-concept and community empowerment can bring about the transformation of African-American United Methodist churches.  The project outlined was a study of some of the themes of Afrocentric spirituality and implementation of those themes in programs of ministry. Two projects, a rite of passage program for boys and a convocation-type event, were developed and evaluated. The method used is a case study of Memorial United Methodist Church, a congregation which committed itself to changing its racial composition.  The case study provides implications for other congregations attempting a similar re-creation as well as suggestions for various levels of the United Methodist connectional system.
