The project's method of study examines the function of narrative theology to biblical story and storytelling with the church being the primary educational setting for children to learn and to experience the biblical stories of faith. A theoretical base discussing children's religious thinking lays the foundation for biblical storytelling as one paradigm for shaping Christian growth in children. Two methods for skills development in storytelling for adults are presented. Complete lessons plans for workshops using the project's research as reference are outlined. Suggested evaluation techniques for workshops are discussed. Small group work with children and program ideas are also presented. Ministers as well as laity may well wait for an individual to approach them with a grief-related situation before they give thought to what will be said or done in order to help the bereaved. In that 'on the spot' form of ministry, the minister does not present his/her best pastoral side and the care-receiver may walk away feeling as though their needs have not been addressed adequately. This dissertation is designed as a practical resource to assist both clergy and laity in the development of an intentional grief ministry within their respective congregational settings. It takes two forms: that of evaluation of the particular church's current ministry to those experiencing grief as well as instruction in the establishment of an intentional grief ministry. Emphasis is placed on the care provider's ability to develop a meaningful relationship with the care receiver."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128611308175360,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:33.985Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:23:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:50:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6727c67e-c798-475d-b06a-2db8382256c2","accessControl_ssim":["0dee4ca6-e8d6-4e8f-81eb-31616fc2f692"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Confronting biblical illiteracy: in dialogue with text and people"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:23:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:08:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["85f66f4d-1a33-4e38-b752-5f87bb7f0569"],"hasLease_ssim":["a9166506-90d5-4550-b90d-29450454a800"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Denise Dombkowski Hopkins"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. After enlistment, leaders and members participated in pre-tests and post-tests to determine learning levels. The seminar was led by the author and was intended to lead each participant to be able to identify their leadership style. Motivational principles were studied and each participant identified how their leadership style affected the motivational level of their followers. Research was conducted on leadership styles that were Christian in basic orientation. While a plethora of secular leadership styles were studied, the concern was for Christian leaders. Motivational principles were based upon Maslow's hierarchy of needs and how Christian leaders can evaluate the needs of followers. The study revealed that a 'democratic' or 'body leader' leadership style was most effective in aiding the motivational level of followers. A balance of 'task' and 'relationship' was also best demonstrated in the 'body leader' style."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["dacf5c07-78c8-4937-a01a-26cd044f9625"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135283507363840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:37.090Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:22:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:32:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1e88b3c6-4dae-4ee9-81f8-671e83af1b2b","accessControl_ssim":["be1e5504-4c9e-4b36-acb9-f438c8364edc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The fire of thought: a double hermeneutic for preaching as pastoral care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:22:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["469848e6-871f-411d-962f-86e6a84bff03"],"hasLease_ssim":["3a7dcea6-027d-4d57-b574-9ce4a5e13523"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Andrew Purves"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph W Patterson"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["System theory","Object relations (Psychoanalysis)","Pastoral theology","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project demonstrated the role of behavioral sciences, specifically systems theory and object relations theory, as interpretive of the congregation in preparation for preaching. Those theories can enable the preacher to conduct a double hermeneutic.
