These are transferred to the church to determine a successful church.  By determining what these expectations are, the pastors and the author could design and modify programs to meet some of these expectations.  The major work of the project was done with the pastor and a workshop in each church.  The participants in the workshop indicated in various ways their cultural expectations for success. There is, however, confusion in the church today about the meaning of salvation.  One traditional approach to understanding salvation, substitutionary atonement, has been questioned by many contemporary theologians.  In this project an eight-week class on understanding salvation today will be designed and taught.  The project focuses on the work of five modern Reformed theologians: Gustav Aulen, John Stott, Karl Barth, Jürgen Moltmann, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Paul Fiddes.  The approach to understanding salvation taken by each is described and consideration is given to the contribution each can make to a contemporary understanding of salvation.  Scripture passages and a background essay for each of the eight lessons are given. Small groups are proven tools for enhancing human relationships. This project uses the seminary's supervised ministry program and adapts the program for the local church for sr high and college students not yet sure of the call of God for pastoral leadership.  Nine students interns were hired for a ten-week summer internship program structured under the model of supervised ministry. Eight youth--five males, three females--and four adults participated in a five-day trip.  The spiritual well-being scale was given as a pre-test and four- and twelve-week post-test.  Each teen kept a journal.  Females grew more than males.  Teens without a parent involved grew more than those with a parent participating.  The Religious Well-Being means rose each testing.  The Existential Well-Being means rose at four weeks, then fell below pre-test mean at twelve weeks. The author used didactic sessions, videos, discussion, and personal encounters to provide participants both cognitive and emotive learning experiences.  Participants were measured, before and after the project, regarding knowledge of alcohol addiction and repositioning of attitudes toward persons addicted to alcohol. Individualized plans for growth were developed based upon findings of the instruments.  The author found great benefit to be found in the communication that took place from the use of the instruments. This was a specifically designed support group ministry. In equipping believers to exercise discernment, hermeneutical training addressed the divine/human nature of Scripture and provided a model for interpreting Scripture given that nature.  Theological training explored the character of God, human free will and divine wrath, the covenant of grace and faith, and the transformational nature of salvation.  A model to use in exercising spiritual discernment was developed and practiced.
