Therefore, the primary goal in the cause of Christ is for local churches and individual believers to build mature, godly disciples.  From his knowledge and experience, the author chose three spiritually mature churches in different geographical and cultural settings to analyze regarding ministries to men. He interviewed the pastors, leaders, and focus groups of men to gain clear perspective regarding the philosophy, programs, and needs of men in today's world. To get at these two questions, this dissertation looks at Karl Barth's understanding of Christian vocation, and some of the cultural forces which press up against that understanding. The project utilized Howard Clinebell's theory of spiritual well-being, Charlotte Davis Kasl's theory of empowerment, Carol Ochs' understanding of feminist spirituality, and the 12-Step and various alternative recovery models in addressing spiritual idolatry.  The project was conducted in a sixteen-week out-patient aftercare program involving seven clients. Spiritual well-being was measured by a test-retest method using the Spiritual Well Being Scale developed by Craig Ellison and Raymond Paloutzian, the Keirsey and Bates Personality Profile, and Howard Clinebell's Relational Well Being Surveys.  The findings supported the thesis that spirituality is a central issue in the prevention of relapse. A design for a continuing education workshop for nursing home administrators was developed, tested, and evaluated. J L Moreno's psychodrama format was utilized with a group of seven couples in a marriage enrichment context extending over two years.  Terry S Smith, counselor/minister, Mrs Billie Verkler, educator/psychodramatist, Dr Bill Verkler, sociologist/social psychologist, and the participants assessed the program as having a profound impact on psychological and spiritual growth of the participants. The case studies indicate many rich transformational experiences for the conservative church members. Focus group interviews were conducted to provide data for qualitative analysis. Participants' stories included the needs they brought to the ministry and the resultant healing and growth which came through a sense of safety, community and other aspects of God's mediating love. The sample consisted of 280 Catholic lay women ranging in age from 18 to 60+ years who currently serve the Church in some capacity in the Diocese of Burlington, Vermont. Response data to questionnaires and interviews are reported by descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, and cross tabulations including chi-square tests for variable independence.  These findings confirmed the original hypotheses except equal representation.
