Current missionary activities in Japan are examined.  A survey was conducted on the teaching of missiology in Japanese seminaries.  Both surveys confirmed the need to establish a clearer understanding of evangelical missiology in Japan.  David J Hesselgrave's textbook, Today's choices for tomorrow's mission, is evaluated as being the best choice among missiological texts for Japanese Christians.  The question whether a dynamic equivalent translation is better than a formal translation is discussed. The paper gives a biblical response to such beliefs and practices.  The method includes case studies, interviews, phone calls and personal letters. This paper studies the reasons for church-mission tensions and proposes general solutions leading to a specific strategy. A new model for church-mission partnership, characterized by mutual responsibility and interdependence is suggested. Called 'project mode,' this new paradigm for participatory partnership was submitted to 23 mission organizations for their evaluation. Its theological conviction is that the incarnational shape of Jesus' life should also be the shape of the church's ministry: a ministry that is of the whole people of God, guided by its public servants.  The project was also built upon the psychological/sociological thesis that lay helpers can have significant outcomes in their peer counseling. The study includes three interviews with healers and five church member case studies. The author outlines a game-plan utilized by Satan in which he uses culture as a means of keeping people from Christ. A strategy being used in a Muslim country was put to a historical, theological, and missiological test.  During this evaluation process it was recognized that a biblical, theological base to shape the approach was not laid. Consequently the strategy was not resulting in glory being brought to God, and also missionaries were not working harmoniously.  Failure to agree theologically about mission results in failure to agree methodologically. A program of four gatherings with the leadership in nine local churches was pursued during fall 1992.  Seven of the churches were younger than ten years.  Two were older churches.  The author used three different surveys among the leaders and members.  Any increase in cooperation in terms of objective growth was not possible to measure. However, the author found new insights regarding existing weaknesses in the fellowship.
