Engaging preaching attends to a network of relationships including God, the text, the preacher, and the congregation.  Four genres are examined as vehicles for engagement: the narrative, the character sketch, the group study, and the monologue.  Results indicate the congregation experiences a positive degree of engagement when the preacher attends to connected relationships.  Genres effect engagement by offering distinctive listening experiences. A process for enhancing creativity in sermon preparation is developed based upon a prototypical approach to Scripture, associational models of imagination and current creativity theory.  Called the Religious Imagination Spiritual Creativity exercise or RISC, this seven-step process is used by several preachers for sermon preparation and is evaluated by lay persons as to its effects on proclamation. Ten sermons were preached: five were formatted inductively, and five deductively.  Retention of data presented was measured by a ten-question test which was administered immediately following each sermon presented.  Each test consisted of eight true or false and two multiple choice questions.  Statistical t-tests were used to compare the mean score of the inductive and deductive sermon formats. The Specific Interpersonal Trust Scale (SITS) measured the levels of trust both before and after the mentoring program.  The SITS scores failed to support the hypothesis; the scale was also faulty as a measurement tool. A sponsorship model was tested where hosts from the church made regular contacts with newcomers over a period of four months. Success in integration was measured by objective and subjective measures of involvement and belonging.  The sponsor contacts with newcomers were evaluated according to quality of contact.  The hypothesis was that success in integration would correlate with contact quality. They fail to show how the preaching of the Word has anything to do with going to work, raising a family, paying bills, or any of the myriad of problems that we face today. The question then is, what is relevant preaching?  A biblically relevant sermon is a sermon that meets needs by relating the principles of Scripture to the human condition. This project used active research in the form of questionnaires to elicit the response of the congregation to felt-need sermons. Measurement was gained from analysis of scores from identical pretest and posttest questionnaires.  The project realized change in an increased knowledge of human sexuality and an understanding of sexuality in the context of creation.
