Two sets of skills are employed: a system design whereby the goals and format of the project are delineated, implemented and evaluated; and, theological reflection in which personal stories are shared and reflected upon in the light of faith.  The project was developed with six parish couples who shared their stories of faith and commitment with couples who were preparing for marriage. This paper presents the theological understanding of hope in both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament.  The issue of theodicy and the meaning of suffering is also discussed.  The different theological understandings of hope for this paper come from Jürgen Moltmann, Wolfhart Pannenberg and John Macquarrie.  A theology of dying and pastoral care techniques are described for the different stages of grief.  These techniques are helpful to pastoral caregivers in providing hope for those who are dying.  The community of faith and their importance in providing hope for the dying is not addressed.  Case studies are presented to describe how the author provided hope to the dying through pastoral care techniques. If the identity of deacons in the Church is ever clarified it will be only because the Church is willing to work with deacons to enable them to become sacraments and symbols of the ministry and service which Jesus so well demonstrated in his life.  The project involved the design, implementation and evaluation of a parish-based continuing formation program for seven permanent deacons.  In the design phase, a needs assessment, including the Deacon Perceiver Interview and the Myers-Briggs as well as systems analysis, were used to articulate goals for the continuing formation program.  In the implementation phase, nine training sessions were conducted which focused on the issue of identity development from the Whiteheads, Erikson, Zullo and Egan, and theological reflection skills. It relates compact CPE to a rite of passage ritual, particularly the second phase known as 'communitas.'  It compacts 400 hours of training into 27 days, as students learn pastoral care by doing it under supervision.  They develop their pastoral identity and style and become aware of how their ministry affects the recipients thereof.  The questions addressed in this study are: Is this process communitas, a ritual?  Does it enhance learning? In chapter 1, the significance and aim of the study are stated.  An effort is made to clarify authority in Christianity in chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses the authority of the pastor in the church.  The authority of the pastor in the Korean church is dealt with in chapter 4.  The following chapters examine the authority of the pastor in the PCK by means of research and personal interviews (twelve hundred pastors and congregations are included). All pertinent research and publications were reviewed, and this information was used as a basis for a seminar designed to inform church-goers of the negative impact non-intentional, indiscriminate viewing has on character development and personal lifestyle values.
