Stage One (Attending) examines literature concerning tradition (the doctrine of Imago Dei), experience (the feminist theology of Letty Russell), and culture (the recent work on codependency).  Stage Two (Asserting) posits a shift in the understanding of the doctrine of Imago Dei and develops a theology of self-esteem; and, Stage Three (Acting) describes a thirty-week course designed and tested as a means of systemtic intervention in an Episcopal congregation. The results of this intervention are measured as pre- and posttests by using the Secord-Jourard Self Cathexis Scale and the Gecas 12-item Semantic Differential Scale (both highly reliable and valid instruments). In addition to a premeditation of the steps to be taken during the initial year of the church there is a chronicling of the implementation of this strategy integrated with a post-evaluation.  The available resources and the role of the sponsoring churches are discussed in the early chapters. Getting to know the target audience, allowing them exposure to the developing church, and effectively communicating the gospel are subsequent key areas covered.  Securing a response to Christ that grew out of understanding, and which took into account culturally appropriate patterns of decision-making was a major concern of the church planters. Historical critical methods show that these words are post-resurrection creations of early ecclesial communities.  The historical Jesus did not 'institute' a ritual and sacrament to his memory.  Analysis of fragments from the Q community, the Didache, the Gospels of John and Luke and Paul's community of Corinth sets the framework for the analysis of the BEM document and LIMA liturgy of the W.C.C.
