The project involved a five week study on nuclear war, out of which a proposal was presented to the general board of the congregation that Rush Creek Christian Church become a 'shalom congregation'. This is a national program of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) which involves a congregation committing one year of making the issue of peace the center of their worship, study, and action.  The motion to become a 'shalom congregation' failed. Each of the steps is viewed in the thesis.  Some of the theological/biblical themes that emerge are: pneumatology and faith, conversion/spiritual transformation, confession, reconciliation and forgiveness, justification by grace, sanctification, freedom, baptism, prayer and meditation, worship, spiritual awakening, evangelism, and discipleship. Research is gathered from existing data and excerpts from over 30 taped interviews with persons who are either recovering alcoholics or are CD counselors in a treatment program and have some affiliation with the Christian faith. They were asked as to any theological/biblical themes they perceived in the twelve steps.  The intent of this thesis is to assist in the construction of bridges for communication and understanding between those in AA and those in the church. It begins with an overview of the Oxford Group Movement and its 8 points and explores the birth of AA looking specifically at the lives of the co-founders. It states a clear theological definition for each of the stages and then uses personal interviews and the author's own experience in urban ministry as a participant observer to build case studies of each stage of the 'church' as these stages exist theologically and empirically among the residents of an inner city metropolitan community like Elliot Park. The project sought through television to focus on needs expressed by the audience, allowing the audience to make a direct response to the counselors on the program.  The report outlines a theological basis for the concept of using television as a means of ministry to people in need.  Methodology included a critique of television and the church's response, which included examples of programming. Data from 59 questions analyzed by 10-church rank; religious types; six sub-samples; male/female; and born-again/not born-again. A group, led by a hospital chaplain, was set up to help patients work steps three, four, and five which are the spiritual core steps of Alcoholics Anonymous' twelve steps. The basis is the institutional needs of the air force and the research-identified needs and interests of chaplains.  These needs are correlated with the applicable principles of holistic growth.  The combined implications become the ingredients of the program. The resulting five-year design was evaluated by fifty-eight chaplains.  They concluded the program was effectively responsive to their needs and interests. This study examines the thesis that a theology of the cross, issuing in realistic, non-violent strategies, provides the most appropriate basis for a ministry committed to peacemaking.  Critical factors that need to inform and guide the theology and praxis of any peacemaking ministry are considered.  The thesis is tested in dialogue with significant sources, with persons exposed to the project, and through use of a questionnaire-survey instrument.
