Six authors are evaluated according to the contribution of each to the following themes: transcendence as found in T S Eliot and Albert Camus, alienation as revealed in Eugene O'Neill and Dostoyevsky, and human redemption as envisioned by Ignazio Silone and Georges Bernanos.  The dissertation contends that each author has unique contributions to bring to Christian thought. Based on the concepts that ministry is for reconciliation, and listening is a vital ministry, the project sought to train lay church members in the art of creative listening.  These trained listeners then called on other church members--especially the disaffected--in an attempt to achieve reconciliation. The historical sources provide sufficient information concerning the colonization and exploitation of Puerto Rico by Spain and the United States.  Puerto Rico's history was examined in the context of the quest of these two countries for imperial power in the Western Hemisphere.  A knowledge of history is essential to a proper understanding of theology, so historical and theological sources have been combined. The theological sources, especially the Bible, give validity to the case for independence. The first step in this investigation was an empirical survey of the extent to which preaching is being done.  Survey participants were non-ordained Dominicans involved in preaching ministries. It provides background for the present situation, reports the findings of the empirical study, holds the data up for reflection and confronts it with pertinent ecclesial questions. Coalition is an interdenominational organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which began in 1971.  At issue is the question whether Coalition's ministries are compatible with a Presbyterian understanding of ministry.  A comparison of Coalition's ministry with a Presbyterian understanding of ministry finds substantial compatibility except in the area of accountability. The data for this project were obtained through the use of questionnaires completed by laity and clergy in this denomination.  The major conclusion drawn from this study is that the clergy is providing premarriage counseling which includes the topics of importance from the viewpoint of the laity. A long-range plan for engaging a church in intentional friendship evangelism is proposed. The birth or arrival of a child awakens religious concerns and stirs a renewed interest in the church. Such can be an occasion for ministry with families.  A rite of dedication commonly is comprised of three components: thanksgiving, promises and blessing.  It is God who dedicates the child to himself in creation.  The parents and congregation are invited to dedicate themselves to engage in the ministry of Christian nurture on behalf of the child.  The Baptist emphasis upon the believer's faith-response tends to make ambiguous the status of the child too young to profess faith.  In affirming the worth of the child, Jesus implied that the child may be a paradigm of the Christian who relies upon God's gracious initiative. The origin and history of the dedication rite among Baptists remains obscure.  It appears there has been an 'instinct' within Baptists to affirm the child's place in the church through a dedication rite.
