The data was gathered through a spiritual assessment tool and unstructured interviews with terminally-ill persons and their families. The author found that frequent interventions benefited the hospice patients through forming a trusting relationship with the hospice chaplain. This relationship enabled a deeper exploration of spiritual and religious need of the terminally ill. A qualitative pro-active research methodology was used involving a case study design to develop a comprehensive narrative based on pre-test and post-test surveys, interviews, quantitative demographic data, and field notes.  Fourteen members of the congregation were involved, eight registered modest improvements in personal computer skills, two reported substantial increases, and four dropped the training. An emancipatory quantitative action research methodology that consisted of one pretest and posttest survey, six stewardship training classes, and two sermons was used to achieve this goal.  A diverse group of twenty-two church officers received stewardship training throughout the project.  Both the researcher and the group grew spiritually during the project. Suffering represents various subjective emotions reflecting absent validation for the pastors. Clergy question their meaningfulness as well as confront the violation of deeply-held expectations regarding their vocation and results of their labors. Clergy seek to improve their circumstances by turning to spiritual, social, emotional, and/or intellectual resources. Greater healing may result, though, as clergy become 'co-creators' of meaning with God. Clergy may eventually integrate the suffering for an enriched faith perspective and enhanced gifts for spiritual leadership. The quantitative method included a four-part pre-test/post-test experimental survey design. A seven-week stimulus was implemented.  It included an orientation, seven classes, four sermons, a mentoring component, and a graduation ceremony.  Quantitative and qualitative analysis instruments-- pre-test/post-test and interviews-- showed a statistically significant increase in the sample population's participation in church activities and knowledge of church terms. Mount Aery Baptist Church, a 77-year old, 1400 disciple African-American congregation, had recently experienced rapid growth.  As a result, its leadership (Pastor and Officers) was often unable to adequately address the numerous congregational needs in a timely manner. The multi-faceted responsibility of pastoring a local church makes the practice very difficult. A study of the development of pastoral care in scripture and history led the author to define pastoral care as leading people into holy living through their faith in Christ within the context of the local congregation provided a foundation for developing praxis for the responsibility. The mutual ministry of the people provides care that has been the objective of pastoral visitation. A sample of congregants was recruited and afforded a treatment consisting of eight seminars, a series of topical sermons and other support. Through the administration of a pre-test and post-test the project measures the discipleship growth of the experimental group as compared with two control groups within the context and three control groups external to the context.
