The manual consists of an introduction, five chapters including footnotes and discussion starters, two appendices, and a bibliography.Chapter I details the origin, development, and parachurch status of deacons' conferences. Three eras of conference history are described: 1906-1930, 1930-1962, 1962-present.Chapter II is a biblical study of service including an examination of Isaiah's suffering servant texts, Mark 10:45 and its Christological basis for service by each Christian, and a study of four New Testament texts frequently noted as influencing our understanding of service and deacons: Acts 6:1-6, Philippians 1:1, 1 Timothy 3:8-13, and Romans 16:1-2.Chapter III examines the theology of service in the Reformed tradition by considering statements in John Calvin; 16th and 17th century Dutch Reformed Church Orders; the 1978-1979 CRC synodical position on worldhunger, 'And He Had Compassion on Them'; Karl Barth; and The Deacons Handbook.Chapter IV considers similarities and differences in the structures of deacons' conferences by comparing past and present conference constitutions. An appeal is made for greater uniformity for deacons' conferences and a new model constitution is submitted for consideration.Chapter V examines deacons' conference constitutions to discover how people become leaders of conferences and what their responsibilities are. Four circles of leadership are detailed, and uniform titles and job descriptions are suggested. The chapter concludes with an analysis of motivating others to engage in diaconal work."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135618728722432,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:56.782Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c7230832-2adc-43bf-a766-356555ef9554","accessControl_ssim":["0010d742-5bc5-4897-b7e3-5171bb672b7f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching : an essential component in a long pastorate"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:51:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8183df22-bbb9-49ee-a9d1-23a30ac186b1"],"hasLease_ssim":["4b1b3bd9-fb45-4a36-8e94-d5dbee60b389"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles Edward van Engen","David P Breen"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The paper is composed of three chapters, a bibliography, and two extended appendixes which are annotated bibliographies of research aids for use in biblical preaching from the Old Testament and the New Testament.Chapter One is an analysis of those factors in the author's background that motivated a search for a deeper level of scholarship in the use of Scripture. The emphasis of the chapter is on the influences and results of anti-intellectualism in the theological milieu of a holiness/fundamental radition.Chapter Two focuses on selected hermeneutical concepts that should be addressed if one is to have an enlarging view of Scripture and its use in preaching. The inter-relationships of the terms hermeneutics, exegesis and biblical preaching are discussed. A clearer understanding of the inspiration of Scripture is examined from a cultural-historical point of view. And, the Bible's statement of its own inspiration is approached through a presentation of II Timothy 3:16.Chapter Three is concerned with the selection and use of research aids for biblical preaching. Guidelines are offered for selecting commentaries. Principles to follow in using commentaries and other research aids are also included. This synthesis shows how the emotional stages can be seen responding to specific losses involved.Chapter Two provides components and strategies for effective programs addressed to the needs identified. These are drawn from research in thesocial sciences and illustrated by examples from selected programs in use across the country. The methods favored are also shown to be expressed in biblical models of ministry.Chapter Three describes a variety of forms for this ministry that would be appropriate for different communities. This commentary serves to create a door in the barrier between the Bible and lay people. The project creates a door so that people can enter into the world of the Bible. The customs, social life, religious practices, and other aspects of first century Palestine are explained in relation to the various pericopes in Mark. As people understand the world in which Jesus lived, they begin to understand the spiritual truths that Jesus was communicating. The project also creates a doorway that allows the Gospel to enter into the lives of people today. As people understand the spiritual truths of Jesus' ministry, they begin to see how these truths can enter into their own lives. Suddenly they discover that God's word is a living word. The commentary begins by using Mark 1:1 as the framework for organizing the introductory material to the Gospel as well as delineating the theological assumptions behind the commentary. The body of the commentary consists of twenty-two sections which contain the first eight chapters of Mark. the comments on each section of the Gospel are divided into two parts. The commentary is designed for lay people. It was created within the context of a congregational Bible study, and was tested by a panel of readers throughout the denomination. The approach of the commentary, and the language used within it, are designed for lay readership. The total comments on each section can be read in fifteen minutes or less, which fits into the maximum devotional time most people alot each day."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135500241731584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:03.784Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"04e3fcdf-9cf2-43aa-9910-e32ef621ee0e","accessControl_ssim":["013c8780-37f2-4001-8978-3ea8d930c808"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An essay on the Particular Synod of Michigan (Reformed Church in America) : its history, present identity and program, and its future"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:15:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a3bfc9dc-c78b-44b2-9190-f7578ea57061"],"hasLease_ssim":["5bbccfab-7b43-4a32-81c1-e46cc1d17f05"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"location_tesim":["Michigan"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Some campus ministers work out of no clear conceptual model while doing ministry. Others work out of a variety of models such as the priest/preacher, the evangelist, the prophet and the counselor. Each of these models has strengths and limitations as we shall attempt to demonstrate. Beyond this, it is my conviction that the paradigm of the sage is able to enrich each model. This project paper focuses on the three major Old Testament works of wisdom: Ecclesiastes, Job, Proverbs; indirectly on wisdom Psalms; plus on elements of wisdom in the New Testament.Closely related to the matter of models of ministry is the issue of self-identity in ministry. Campus ministers often suffer from identity confusion. They serve in a setting of faculty, staff, and students. The campus minister bears similarity to each of these, yet is none of them. The campus minister teaches, administers programs and continually learns. Still the minister realizes that none of these functions fully describes one's professional identity. Who then really is the campus minister? I want to argue that the biblical sage offers itself as a congenial and productive identity model for campus ministers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135560101789696,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:00.871Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ef284c37-9277-4413-a51c-9e70139c9c9a","accessControl_ssim":["24f730fd-0061-4f30-98f3-7ae0d703203f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The use of Milton Erickson's therapeutic style to correlate pastoral therapy and spiritual direction"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:47:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:57:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fd798d8c-da68-47ab-8954-b3760a8d09ba"],"hasLease_ssim":["e96977cc-f282-4b0f-900e-2b5a628e825b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard John Bennink"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Some biographical information about Erickson is included.Chapter Three sets the phenomenon of hypnosis within the context of the Christian religion and demonstrates some affinities between the two as well as noting some antagonisms.Chapter Four discusses the subject/object split as one of the mind's defenses against the presence of God and introduces the concept of 'facades' as functional perimeters of the conscious mind.Chapter Five offers a model which demonstrates Ericksonian techniques applied to the process of spiritual direction and shows how this helps people to move beyond the facades explained in Chapter Four.Chapter Six relates Ericksonian approaches to pastoral therapy through a process of spiritual direction to form the basis for a spiritually directive style of pastoral therapy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135708464807936,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:22.361Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
