The second part of the first chapter explores the development of pastoral care in the history of the church, noting how it both molded and responded to the dominant theological and cultural themes of each period.Chapter Two is a brief history of the development of the modern pastoral counseling movement. This chapter demonstrates that the movement came about in an attempt to incorporate new psychological theory and clinical practice into education for ministry.Chapter Three uses a survey of current pastoral counseling literature and the results of interviews which I conducted with pastoral counselors to describe the current orientation of the pastoral counseling movement. Chapter Four suggest ways that pastoral counselors may recover or strengthen their pastoral identity. This chapter explores the meaning of ordination to the pastoral ministry, with special consideration given to the ministry of Word, Sacrament, and Order. The final chapter demonstrates some of the ways in which the special skills and calling of the pastoral counselor may be used in the parish and addresses some of the objections which are raised to the practice of counseling by parish pastors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135477770747904,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:51:42.354Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"94531b56-1dc1-4157-8821-514b61d26586","accessControl_ssim":["ff80d96d-9747-41d7-ac44-d525515f21f2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Staffing to fulfill the Great Commission : paraprofessionals in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:28:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bfc39863-c615-4b73-a251-c430bba2844c"],"hasLease_ssim":["89f0650e-e9c4-4ca0-8a95-257a015783be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The business model of staffing and management principles adds credibility to paraprofessionals. Growth is documented through this multi-level staffing model by a partial survey of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod congregations already using such staff.Chapter Three builds a biblical and confessional base for the paraprofessional model by identifying the call of every Christian in baptism, the special call of the professional church worker, and the special call of the paraprofessional and volunteer staff.Chapter Four outlines the way paraprofessionals have evolved at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Kentwood, Michigan. Paul's letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4:7-13, is a challenge in this project. Being human is a gift of God. It is good. It is rich and satisfying, not in spite of the hurt and pain of separation and difficulty, but because in those times, one experiences the awesome, holy presence of God when there is a significant other there to sustain and to guide. It is in those times that faith is born, and the process of healing begins. The chaplain is a vehicle through whom God works the process of healing, sustaining, guiding, and reconciling. The goal: healthy, whole humanity living in community. The second section discusses pastoral care in the Christian tradition and how that tradition helps define the role of chaplain in a 20th century institutional setting. The three sub-divisions of the second section discuss the role of spiritual physician in counseling, Christian education arid spiritual life activities, and worship. Section three discusses chaplaincy in the modern psychiatric hospital where the clinical model is foremost in treatment; yet, the need for pastoral availability and theological resources are recognized as important dimensions of basic physical and mental health. The three sub-sections discuss the role of spiritual guide in working with the multidisciplinary treatment team as it designs the treatment for each adolescent, with staff in areas of relationship and spiritual growth, and with the community as it struggles to understand adolescent developmental issues."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135658430955520,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:34.645Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"653b21c7-e0f1-431a-ba7c-5a7a49be34b4","accessControl_ssim":["2a674260-586e-44d5-8b51-6c4e8c015e12"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Heuristic correlation of Kohutian self psychology and Pauline anthropology as a resource for pastoral psychotherapy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:05:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a1f03c10-c202-4ed1-ae4a-65e3f4d580d0"],"hasLease_ssim":["d6658bd9-037b-4b49-aa87-17b4f637d248"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Pastoral psychotherapy's growing interest in addressing narcissism via Heinz Kohut's self psychology is also discussed.Chapter Two summarizes the life and work of Heinz Kohut. The chapter discusses basic theoretical and clinical psychology of the self concepts, and describes the special relevance of psychology of the self for pastoral psychotherapy.Chapter Three discusses selected aspects of Pauline anthropology. The chapter emphasizes the theocentric perspective of Paul's anthropology; summarizes important themes in Paul's view of humanity in relationship to God; and discusses psychoanalytic interpretations of Paul and his concepts.Chapter Four combines exegetical insights from Pauline texts with basic concepts of Kohutian self psychology to present a five-point correlation between the theological perspectives of Paul and the psychoanalytic perspectives of Kohut.Chapter Five provides clinical examples of the validity of the proposed correlation. The practice of infant baptism requires covenant theology; only with this can the distortions of the practice be corrected and its criticisms answered.Chapter Two, building upon Chapter One, identifies confidence as the chief result of the living within the Reformed tradition. The heart of such confidence is the knowledge that our salvation is grounded in the love and initiative of God. Churches grounded in covenant theology are able to offer their people a 'solid rock' on which to build their spiritual life.Chapter Three focuses upon the 'reality and function of doubt within the believer's life. 'It is our confidence before God which enables us to accept and understand the presence of doubt within the believer's life and the manner in which God uses doubt to deepen our faith. Doubt is not the opposite of faith, but rather a potential within a living faith.Chapter Four, flowing from the previous three, articulates some definitions for Reformed spirituality. This is followed by an examination of personal and social forces capable of affecting how older persons feel about life and themselves as well as their congregations. Also discussed is the discovery and the stewardship of those special gifts God gives the Christian in later life.Part II describes a research project conducted among 451 active church members fifty-five years of age or older. Using a 103-item questionnaire distributed among members willing to participate from a number of churches, the study sought to determine, define, and measure the religiosity of these members using factor analysis. The items loaded into five factors named Orthodoxy, Personal Faith, Treatment, Satisfaction with Life, and Dissatisfaction with Life. By comparison and correlation of these factors, and of items within and between the factors, it was found that this population of older church members has a positive attitude about life and more so about their congregations. The attitudes of men and women were similar regarding life, but regarding their congregations women felt more positive. Men want to feel more useful to their congregations. Retirement in the past year appears to have a more negative influence upon attitudes than any other loss mentioned."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135710020894720,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:23.845Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fcdbe87b-9180-4e66-8e10-c68e5295dab0","accessControl_ssim":["7da54240-3510-41aa-b8ef-088ec06dbedf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Raising faith-full children : a handbook for parents of early adolescents"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:21:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4c670903-bbb1-4772-bb9e-88c974c06cc3"],"hasLease_ssim":["5e9292a8-3869-4989-ba20-3e45f6341b4b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George Brown Jr"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A further hypothesis is that there is an identifiable developmental process which is applicable to corporate as well as to individual growth and development. Assuming that such an identifiable developmental process exists, it then follows that this process can be used as both a descriptive and prescriptive tool to determine whether or not a specific corporate group in the Christian community, together with its leadership, is developing in a wholesome way. The application which is addressed in this project is to the community of the congregation. The project is itself an integration of previous years of study and learning units for the Doctor of Ministry degree. The practical application of the stated hypothesis is to the development of the congregational life of First Reformed Church of Grandville, Michigan from 1977 to 1986."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135575837769728,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:15.878Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:51:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"37885852-a1a1-47f2-9a92-81ccdb3730f5","accessControl_ssim":["31051b50-941b-4cb5-a883-047a00dc7bbe"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["On holy ground : spiritual formation with a reformed accent"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:46:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:44:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["91442079-940d-4e92-b2b8-c687055c4d99"],"hasLease_ssim":["0feb504d-13cc-49e3-9a94-c26205d36fff"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Virgil Cruz"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The three characteristics of our Tradition are examined: the catholic, evangelical, and reformed. The fourth chapter, Holy Ground Surveyed, scans the development of a variety of Roman Catholic and Protestant spiritualities with a view to understanding the thread of unity which develops within each tradition. The fifth chapter, The Holy Ground Celebrated, focuses on the ancestral roots of Reformed spirituality as found within the Old and New Testaments, the early church, sixteenth century Reformation down to the Liturgy of 1968.The sixth chapter, The Holy Ground Explored, examines in more detail the unique gifts to Reformed spirituality of our father in God, John Calvin, and other Reformed divines. The seventh chapter, The Holy Ground Appropriated, investigates the rich treasures we have inherited from our Reformed past, but which can be 'recycled for current use' to our profit and advent age.
