There is little understanding of the strategic need for a phased program of disciple making. Some churches are behind in this matter in that the church makes no arrangement for a planned, cohesive, well-coordinated ministry of taking people from the basic truths of the gospel and moves them on in the growing process. Pastors can have effective ministry as disciple makers and as change agents in the local church to help alleviate this problem. There are people in the local church who have never moved beyond simple belief in Jesus Christ; one result being a void in lay-workers and stunted spiritual lives. This major project is designed to demonstrate practically how a pastor can effectively lead a men's small group basic discipleship course. A series of six roundtable conversations was undertaken, each conversation focusing on a different element of the mission statement.  Sermons were developed from these conversations. This question is the driving force behind this project and can be divided into three distinct components. The first component deals with the pastor as leader. The pastor above any other person should be the 'spiritual influencer' within the local church. The second component deals with the overall spiritual formation of the congregation. The third component deals with the spiritual development of elementary school-aged children. To address the third component, without giving adequate attention to the first two, would be a futile attempt at fixing a problem in our church that is deep and multi-faceted. The author studied the scientific data supplying the plot and details of the story.  She compared and contrasted several contemporary cosmologies.  She described several biblical themes supporting a cosmically conscious hermeneutic.  After analyzing the needs reported by two focus groups of preachers she developed a series of hermeneutical exercises for the preacher.  She described and evaluated a workshop in which participants used these exercises in preparing their preaching. One of the major needs that must be addressed in the Christian community and in the local church is the mentoring of Christian men in family leadership. Even when men lead at work, in the community and other places, often they do not effectively lead at home.  A partial remedy for this need is to place these men into accountability groups.  One such group will be formed with five men who desire to develop their spiritual leadership skills.  The purpose of the twelve sixty-minute sessions is for the men to grow in their spiritual leadership ability.  A part of the information for each session will be submitted by thirty or more spiritually mature Christian men who will comment on the kind  of spiritual leadership they practice in their families. It is hoped that the principles that are taught to the men will be caught by the spirit of the project leader and the other men involved in the advisory group. The uniqueness of this project is that it offers parishioners an opportunity to use story sharing and the grieving process to deal with the change and transition associated with this move. Focus group sessions and 'town-hall' meetings provide opportunities for sharing and growth.
