Spurgeon called 'high doctrine and broad doctrine.' This study looks at Lakeview in terms of its doctrinal identity and missional culture and offers an explanation of the relationship between the two. The project is a qualitative case study that makes use of observations, document analysis, and individual and group interviews to gather data that provides a rich description of doctrinal and missional commitments at Lakeview. This study examines this dilemma in the practice of pastors in the Westminster Tradition. The pastoral practice has sought to define what it means to partake of the Supper in a worthy manner, and pastors have urged their parishioners to examine themselves for the presence of gospel knowledge, faith, repentance and love, or new obedience. Meanwhile, a minority tradition existed which frowned on self-examination and focused instead on those who had a covenantal right to the Supper as defined by baptism and church membership. The 'fencing' tradition is an endangered species today. Postmodern authors have noted a significant change in Western culture, affecting world view and specifically denying the existence of an over-arching explanation of reality known as metanarrative. This study employed a qualitative research design interviewing twelve Teaching Elders of the PCA. The findings revealed a strong commitment to the Reformed value that scripture alone is sufficient as a source for the content of sermons. In addition I interviewed experienced preachers about their own growth in this dimension of their preaching ministry. With so much information on leadership in the secular world and in the Christian world, how does the leader discern what to teach other leaders? This study looked specifically at God as leader, Jesus as leader, Moses, David and Paul as leaders. Secondly, the study reviewed the extra-Biblical literature on the topic of leadership. Eight Area Directors were interviewed by the author and asked to discuss what they were teaching in their leadership training times. The results were compiled from these three sources and concluded whether or not the Area Directors were on the right course in teaching Biblical leadership principles. Recommendations were made based on finds. It reflects on the theology of discernment in the Christian tradition with particular emphasis on Ignatius of Loyola and the Quaker tradition, as well as in-depth interviews with United Methodist clergy on the practices of discernment that have been helpful to them over the course of their career with an emphasis on how to transition from positive placement settings. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews. The review of literature and analysis of the interviews focused on three key areas that make for maximum impact on the worshiper: intellect, affect, and will. The study concluded that for meaningful worship to happen, the engagement of all three areas is essential, making an impact that continues throughout the week. A review of literature on the ars moriendi tradition reveals common themes of hope, compassion, and patience. For the African American community, the Bible continues to be the source for understanding death. Among this community, acceptance of hospice services has been slow. The project was developed to help the African American community embrace hospice care. An end-of-life care workshop that partnered hospice caregivers and African American church leadership was developed.
