In response to this problem the researcher first investigated Scripture's mandate to the church regarding its treatment of single mothers and their sons, as well as the related issues of poverty, loneliness, and low status. The researcher then examined literature about the causes, challenges and possible resources of single mothering. These steps informed the subsequent qualitative research project that gathered data through personal interviews, field notes, surveys, and on-site group discussions with single Hmong mothers, lay leaders, community leaders, pastors, entrepreneurs, and educators. From this data a grounded theory on the subject of single Hmong mothers emerged. Qualitative interviews revealed causes including a fear of confusion, fear of change or having perspectives changed. Feeling that issues sere too overwhelming was mentioned, as were busyness with work and family responsibilities. Leverage respondents' interest in spirituality to educate about social justice. use methods that don't require reading. Avoid themes of 'change' or 'personal transformation.' A well self-defined person has clear goals, boundaries, and values. Low levels of self-differentiation negatively impact pastors ability to deal with manipulation, the herd-mentality, and relational conflict. Before and after a twelve week training course pastors were tested using three categories of Human Synergistic's Life Styles Inventory. This intervention stressed the importance of building a solid relationship with God as the foundation of Christian marriage. Participants attended training on the paradigm and were evaluated for marital saitsfaction. A key focus was on the husband supporting the wife in her self-differntiation to become what God made her to be. The six-session program (including a twelve-chapter story, reflection questions, and group discussion) was based on biblical theology of mission and work as well as core concepts in the Business as Mission movement. Fifteen marketplace leaders participated in the three-month program. participants. Participants were pretested and posttested using both quantitative and qualitative measurements.
