To gain an understanding of substance dependence treatment and how this issue has become widespread, the project director researched and provided current statistics on substance dependence. Educational and substance abuse professionals were enlisted to review materials utilized in the development of the workshop. The project director also utilized scripture to validate and support the treatment approach. The project director assisted Christian lay counselors in conceptualizing the nature and character of substance dependence. The project director enabled Christian lay counselors to provide substance dependence treatment by combining a faith-based and twelve-step model. The cognitive behvior method of psychotherapy was used. The first phase explored the fields of multigenerational worship and strategic planning. The first part of the second phase required the project director to equip the pastoral staff of FBCM in the basic skills of strategic planning and to inform them concerning the dynamics of multigenerational worship. The second part of the second phase required the project director to lead the pastoral staff team to develop a strategy to transition FBCM from venue worship to a multigenerational worship model. Phase three resulted in the deacon fellowship and church council of FBCM approving the strategic plan and the time line for implementation. Seven one hour and fifteen-minute sessions were designed, in which ten leaders took part. The training sessions addressed the following issues: understanding the emotional system of the church, positioning leaders to address conflict, analysis of the conflict through the five levels of conflict, analysis of the conflict through roles and communication study, communication skills, dealing with the problematic, and specific skills training for resolution of conflict. Yet UCC congregations are polarized. The UCC is congregational; the local congregation is the 'basic unit.' Unity must be nurtured within local congregations. Rooted in the scriptural call for unity amid diversity, and built upon the work of others calling for unity in the church, the author proposes a model addressing worship, proclamation, community and service. Diversity is brought out into the open and affirmed rather than being discouraged or ignored. The research project invited participants to take nature photographs and reflect on them with a scripture passage, prayer or devotional thought. Each participant presented their photos and spiritual reflections to a study group for discussion.
