The congregational story project, entitled Discovering Trinity's Angel, entailed videotaping long-time members, sharing remembrances of the innovative ways the congregation communicated the gospel throughout its history. These stories were shown in worship throughout Lent, 2006, and were accompanied by presentations on the influence of media in biblical and church history. The impact of biblical storytelling and the Discovering Trinity's Angel project were measured by both survey and focus groups. Church leaders at Campbell African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. participated in an eight-week Bible study on faith, love, and power, and the healing ministry of Jesus and its implications for the church today. Additionally, participants attended a focus group session to outline the healing ministry of the contemporary church. Study results indicate a renewed passion for ministry. The data triangulation methodology included surveys, interviews, and audio/videotape recordings. The researcher discovered that, while a majority had an awareness of the congregation's culture and language, only 40% surveyed understood how culture and language applied to their roles as church leaders. Implementation occurred during a nine-week worship series that connected biblical stories with life stories and prepared parents to expand upon those connections at home while helping their children add pictures and information to scrapbooks. The overall project proved unsuccessful due to sporadic worship attendance and lack of parental follow-up at home. Because the modern church holds very little common understanding of the history, ontology, and even functional role of the diaconate, modern deacons are often left with conflicting messages regarding their role, most often with regard to preaching. Therefore, this paper will include a foundation in the exegesis of several key passages of the Biblical text in which the diaconate is established (such as choosing of the first deacons in Acts, chapter 6), exercised (such as Stephen's sermon in Acts, chapter 7), and defined (as in 1 Timothy, chapter 3). Several passages and themes will be explored in depth to gain an understanding of the Biblical expectations of the office of deacon. Furthermore, the examples of deacons in each of the major eras of church history will be offered for consideration. Through study of a number of deacons' ministries throughout the Patristic, Medieval and Reformation eras, we shall explore the traditional roles and boundaries of the diaconal ministry. In my project, I have wrestled with who Christ is to me and to the church. This Christology is the focal point of my work. As I engaged and continue to engage in the struggle for the soul of the church, this project represents my work on this effort.  Revising my view of Christ is central to this work. This project draws insights from contemporary Unitarian Universalist theology to articulate a Unitarian Universalist homiletic. This theology of preaching suggests that our preaching should invite and provoke listeners into participation, and through that participation, transcendence. The project includes sections on conversational preaching (McClure, Rose), process-theology preaching (Allen, Suchocki, Blosser), textual preaching for Unitarian Universalists, worship, preaching as liberation (Smith), and the preacher's authority and autobiography.  Implications for practice and pedagogy are suggested.
