Although most faith-based community development corporations are established and sustained by larger, African American congregations, this study contends that small churches also have the capacity to achieve effective community development corporation outcomes in economically distressed neighborhoods. In an effort to implement the participatory action research (PAR) model, this researcher sought to facilitate the process of empowerment and social change through the development of three training workshops for pastors and ministers and one final evaluation session that summarized and reported on the input from the target group. It was expected that, through this process, the researcher and the participants would gain an increased awareness of the biblical/theological and historical foundations of community economic development; the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to launch a community development corporation; as well as the challenges associated with engaging in community development.  There were six major implications drawn from the results of this research project. The director researched available resources on spiritual gifts to develop a training curriculum consisting of six equipping sessions.  Participants learned about the biblical principles of spiritual gifts as well as current ministry opportunities in their church.  The director measured the project's effectiveness through the commitment of participants, group dialogue and assessment, and personal reflection. This was accomplished by developing an integrated discipleship strategy for young people, parents, and senior citizens to collaborate on biblical mandates and other resources to transform all of their lives spiritually. Resources included literary research, youth minister interviews, and two decades of youth ministry experience. The project director developed the Spiritual Mentor Workshop to train people to mentor others in discipling relationships.  Research yielded valuable information in the fields of mentoring, discipleship, and curriculum design to accomplish this goal.  The workshop was a seven-week training event that equipped twelve people, six men and six women, to be spiritual mentors.  The project director used various evaluative measures, including assistance from academic expert Dr. Jerry Pounds and educational expert Carol Passmore, to analyze the project.  The workshop launched spiritual mentoring as a disciple-making strategy at His Church in Pineville. The author  suggests that such an addiction in the life of a believer is a matter of idolatry. He points out that the normal secular counseling strategies with their emphasis on addiction as 'disease' and even many of the 'so called' Christian strategies fail to address the spiritual issues involved in ways that bring real healing and wholeness. The author read extensively in the literature published on this topic and interviewed those involved with the addiction including victims, counselors and the abusers themselves. Churches can have and do all the 'right things': congregational unity, biblically faithful worship and teaching, baptisms, large missions receipts, deep savings, community outreach programs, and denominational notoriety--and yet dontinue to experience numerical stagnation and even decline. This project discusses the local church as a living organism exploring the theory that every church is unique such that identifying and actively expressing its congregational DNA can lead to revitalization. In this study the responses to a series of congregational surveys, interviews, and inventories were 'interpreted' and used to identify a church's DNA.
