But is it possible that some evangelical churches with biblical doctrine have similar characteristics as full blown cults? What are those characteristics and how strongly do they make their presence known? This project seeks to examine if churches that have evangelical doctrine can be similar to cults despite their underpinnings of biblical truth. Results from thirteen unhealthy churches represented by thirty former members are examined through the use of a descriptive survey. The descriptive survey's results are examined so that useful recommendations could be made to help churches recover from cultish conditions or to prevent churches from becoming cult-like."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130740585398272,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:36:24.622Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:12:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:40:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d42a7ada-6ee7-4b78-81f9-b06989a5ae97","accessControl_ssim":["bc42c48e-591d-4551-8af5-e2b41bb9e8af"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Case studies of leadership practices for leading cultural transformation within church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:12:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:11:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8b30af0-24da-4a01-a4c1-f1ee29f4371f"],"hasLease_ssim":["8bb1ec28-22b4-4285-91ec-ab0e1885bd9d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Barry D Jones"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Heath E Marion"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Organizational change","Congregations","Christianity and culture","Social groups"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this dissertation is that there is an association between key leadership practices that allow leaders to transform organizational church culture. The body of the dissertation is divided into three parts. A literature review examines literature associate with leadership, change management, church health and growth, organizational culture, and biblical studies so that key practices can be determined. The research procedure section defines the case study methods, criteria, questions, and reliability of the research. The case studies themselves demonstrate the key leadership practices used by three pastors to bring about culture transformation within each respective church. There are three key practices for leading cultural transformation within churches developed in this dissertation. First, there is an association between the leadership practices of identifying the current cultural philosophies and overall cultural transformation in the church. Second, there is an association between the leadership practices of disrupting the existing cultural philosophies and overall cultural transformation in the church. Third, there is an association between the leadership practice of freezing new cultural philosophies and overall cultural transformation in the church. When each leadership practice is understood and implemented organizational cultural transformation can occur."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131012258856961,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:43.710Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:12:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:27:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d439e756-aa9d-4a06-a3ce-3c3f71beae18","accessControl_ssim":["49e789c5-0ac9-4dec-8c7a-d271273828f6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["In this house where the wounded gather: a theology of exile for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:12:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:11:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1d69b1cf-a9c7-4d88-b38c-43d9519b2d88"],"hasLease_ssim":["804a36c5-8ef3-49f2-bcd1-e641f2a31a37"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce C Birch"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Five hypotheses guided this study: people from the mother church leave to plant the new church; church planters have a relationship with the mother church before starting a new church; daughter churches are planted locally in relation to the mother church; daughter churches are financially supported by the mother church for a period of time; and the people from the daughter church fully support the church planter. The hypotheses were supported by the literature and case study. As a result of these case studies, seven principles surfaced. The first principle is finding the 'right' person. Without the 'right' person, the rest of the principles do not matter. Principle number two is assessment, which verifies that he, is indeed the 'right' person for the job. Principle number three is the five percent rule: every new church that is planted will give five percent of its offerings to an escrow account for a minimum of three years. This is where the money comes from to plant new churches. Principle number four is partnering for the purpose of sharing resources. Principle number five is that a church plant becomes a fully functional church on its launch day, which allows the bookkeeping systems of the church to include paying the salary of the church planter from day one. Principle number six is raising support, which takes the pressure off the church planter to raise his full salary. Principle seven is networking, which makes partnering easier and contributes to the nonfinancial support of the planters. It is hoped that these principles will work to make a difference in the way churches are started and that they will be tested in different places by other networks of churches that desire to create movements of church planting churches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130058766680064,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:34.389Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:12:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:24:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"91f9a6ca-aff2-48d4-8632-cbd56ed9039d","accessControl_ssim":["dce87f4b-9afb-4524-aaa0-3f2e1fbb5838"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Fresh eyes: the living experience of a turnaround church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:12:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:24:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["29a80182-b2d4-4b65-b6cc-0fbe03a91895"],"hasLease_ssim":["6bc6dce3-bcc5-4829-b2fd-350708e1c5aa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Sarah B Drummond"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mary Louise Gifford"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Church membership","Church renewal--Congregational churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Mainline Protestant churches in the United States have been experiencing dramatic decline in membership and financial resources over the last thirty-five years. many, including the Wollaston Congregational Church United Church of Christ, have found ways to turnaround their church and experience hope for the future through a new vitality.
