After the departure of their long-term pastor, South Church faced internal, communal, and cultural transitions. This project used narrative tools to reconnect the congregation to their biblical, communal and personal faith stories. The three tools were 1) a Lenten-Eastertide sermon series; 2) remembering the church's history using their 250th anniversary banners; and 3) an Appreciative Inquiry process. Prison chaplains work in a unique position with inmates who feel the reality of their life decisions. The addiction feels more powerful even than God. Imagine the chaos created in the soul of a person who wants to change, but does not know how. Will power and guilt have not worked; neither have inpatient or outpatient programs or threats. The author researched this subject matter by studying the history of racism and sexism in America and in the African American church.  She interviewed women preachers and male preachers who have had a history of supporting, affirming and celebrating women in ministry and in leadership roles in the church. Each lesson includes as historical description of slavery and an explanation of a spiritual. The curriculum focuses on the public and coded, secret meanings in spirituals. Bible references as source inspiration are provided with each spiritual. A professional panel of twenty-one educators evaluated the curriculum. They found it was an objective presentation of the history of slavery and the spirituals. The particular focus of the paper is finding resources to deal with remaining trauma after the conflict has been officially declared settled.  This paper offers the framework of illness narrative as a resource for understanding and healing church conflict.  Resources from biblical and theological sources are also explored. Self help advice versus God centered instruction: can biblical expositional preaching provide answers for contemporary issues?"],"abstract_tesim":["In today's culture, it seems as if the voice of the therapeutic culture is louder and having more validity than the word of God.  As the pastor of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, GA, the author was able to ask the question: can biblical expositional preaching help a multigenerational church steeped in therapeutic culture deal with contemporary issues?  A case study was produced where first the author developed a focus group to develop the contemporary issues that were important to the congregation as well as a survey to identify the top contemporary issues to be highlighted in a sermon series preached at Tabernacle Baptist Church.  After the sermon series, those who participated in the initial survey were asked to participate in a follow-up survey to see if the preaching was helpful in dealing with contemporary issues. Two questionnaires were employed and the results indicated a fairly high degree of belief in a uniquely Quaker paradigm of pastoral ministry. A survey was distributed to the clergy of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church to assess their experience of the dark night of the soul. Interior influences like struggles with sexual issues, low self-esteem, and moral conflicts contributed to a greater experience of the dark night of the soul.
