Their involvement in the community was also noted in terms of service organizations, ministry to one another, and leadership responsibilities to new people. The project involved working with a group of teenagers over a fourteen week period.  They were taught about preaching and exposed to expository preaching in depth.  The project researched the characteristics of the modern teenager and developed a model for expository preaching with teenagers. The project director researched a sampling of existing pastor search documents and conducted interviews with church members currently or recently involved in the pastor search process for their church.  These interviews provided insight into the interpersonal dynamics at work in the congregations involved and the procedures used in smaller member congregations.  Additional study in curriculum theory helped in the development of a quality guide. The cases are reviewed along four parameters that define basic conditions needed for a human being to be well and to thrive: i.e., connection, identity, freedom, and power; and from three perspectives: family systems using Edwin Friedman's work, individual psychology using Karen Horney's work, and spiritual theology using Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises. It then traces some of the history of short term missions to the present.  A church-based study was conducted through a questionnaire sent to every EPC congregation.  The project also records information from interviews with leaders from there EPC congregations who seem to be doing short-term missions well. The first part studies the social, biblical, theological, and historical context to demonstrate the need for small group ministry. It was anticipated that completing the discipleship programs researched would strengthen participants' spiritual health in each of the six areas measured. It was discovered that the only area in which the programs studied strengthened maturing participants' spiritual health was that of 'Committed to the Lost.' Other significant discoveries were made concerning the affect of gender, church size and age on spiritual health. Significant contributors to spiritual health were also discovered.
