This project evolved because I have seen the collateral damage that has occurred between incumbent and emerging leaders.  It is based upon the research completed by Ron Carcucci in Leadership divided: what emerging leaders need and what might be missing.I brought together a selected group of incumbent and emerging leaders to see how the relationship gap that separates them could be reduced. I invited them to join me for an eight-session learning experience. Two projects of home repair were secured with 33 people participating and 19 serving as a comparison group. Both groups received identical training and completed a Likert scale pretest and posttest questionaire. Pretest and posttest data from the Sex-Role Egalitarian Scale (SRES) and the Chinese Dyadic Adjustment Scale (C-DAS) indicated that the seminar was associated with an increase in mutual understanding and self awareness but was not correlated with the overall C-DAS score. Interviews and scaled response statements were employed to assess changes throughout the process. The results indicated that developmentally based performance reviews did generate improved job clarity and aligned staff members with the church vision. However, improved satisfaction with personal development was not supported. The amount of time the minister spent with his family in various ways contributed towards the connectedness the family feels with him. The minister and his wife must set and communicate realistic standards to the children. Teamwork between the parents in approaching tasks in the home, and respecting the volition of the mother lead to the wife and children's sense of the minister supporting the wife. Respect must be shown to all, by all.
