Drawing from Augustine, from church planters in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and from my own experience, I propose that the three central themes of mainline new church preaching are: hospitality, teaching, and prophetic proclamation. This thesis also breaks new ground by incorporating newcomers/seekers into the sermon formation process. Consumerism is analyzed through its history and through its present key features, including the loss of certainty, individualism, choice, consumption, and commodification. By looking at individualism, branding and shopping, identity in a consumeristic world is examined. The answer lies in the adoption of practices, as defined by Alistair McIntyre. Hospitality, which is given as a model of practice, is examined starting from its biblical roots up to current proposals. To answer the question, How can expatriate missionaries enhance the pastoral ministries of evangelical church leaders in Honduras? The training used an action and reflection model. The chaplains actively engaged in ministry while reflecting upon the theological basis for that ministry. The Confessions of Saint Augustine of Hippo was the primary resource for spiritual self-examination. Chaplains need to be spiritually ready for ministry in war. This training occurred during 2003-2004 at Chapel Five, Fort Dix, New Jersey. In order to gain data about respondents' doctrines of gender equality, survey research and analysis were utilized to assess different aspects of gender foundations: gender roles, ideology identification, and leadership practices in the church. The research yielded a sample of 195 millennial evangelicals between the ages of 18-25. These statistics identify that there is an emerging reality in evangelical culture: a disparity between the teaching of the church and the theological convictions of young adults. Young evangelicals express interest in understanding biblical manhood and biblical womanhood. They are reading books, listening to sermons, and engaging in conversations with peers and mentors about these topics. Within this sample, millennials were coming to conclusions that women are equally gifted with men. This examination affirms biblical teaching which simultaneously endorses cultural particularity while affirming the universality of humanity under God.  This universality is based on creation, God's redemptive plan for all nations, Jesus' death on the cross, the establishment of the church, and the eschatological vision of the multi-cultural assembly in Revelation 5:9 and 7:9.
