It begins with an empirical analysis of moral issue articles within two Seventh-day Adventist journals, Ministry Magazine and Message Magazine, over the period from fall 2001 through December 2005. Next, a conceptual analysis is undertaken of the theological model that informs moral judgments within these journals. The conclusions of the analysis are that the model of moral theology is legalistic in its commitment to an inflexible and literalistic biblicism. In addition to critiquing the model for moral theology within these journals, the model of moral theology offered by Immanuel Kant is reviewed and found to be inadequate for providing a viable alternative. This is because it too is legalistic in its commitment to an inflexible rationalism. What is offered as a viable alternative for a robust Adventist moral theology is one that takes seriously the Adventist heritage by organically binding moral imperatives to prima facie biblical principles that emerge from major biblical motifs. Moreover, this model incorporates the Adventist prophetic witness to oppressive contexts. This is the organic-prophetic-liberation model of social engagement."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132063300059136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:57:26.061Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:31:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:00:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7f518627-643d-410c-bf2e-2e996b3be906","accessControl_ssim":["29c69928-0ea2-458c-8a72-ca90fdc3fc49"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Communicating biblical truths using your five senses"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:31:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:53:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cd00f792-42c3-419b-9323-ad995086ed06"],"hasLease_ssim":["8a8c96bd-1e7e-45de-b99f-76cb609622cb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Allan Karr"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dennis Felder"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Study--Methodology","Senses and sensation","Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Communicating biblical truths using sensory stimuli is a creative way to share the Christian faith. Insights and instruction for transitioning to a policy of governance model of board governance is proffered in the project report."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719143943962624,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:45:24.323Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:53:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4c170def-b876-4810-9d60-47a4864e32c1","accessControl_ssim":["a2ad093f-c25e-40ed-9b3d-79f160da7978"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Toward a relational theology of Fa'a-Samoa"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:22:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["12eae284-2734-42eb-aedf-e2f9778dc6e8"],"hasLease_ssim":["2f4504e4-734b-4838-b1d4-6e9259f32844"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip Clayton"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"location_tesim":["Oceania","Samoa"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Liona L Thompson"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Christianity and culture","Religion and culture","Process theology","Theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to recover and apply the Samoan traditions and values through employment of process theology, in order to construct a relational theology of the Fa'a-Samoa (the Samoan way of living). Samoans a century ago were given the impression that their cultural values and traditions were somewhat primitive and unfit for the Christian faith. They were told that it was a culture of pagans and heathens, and it did not have a place in the community of faith. Samoan people are proud of their heritage and take pride in their culture, but are somehow confused when they attempt to relate their culture to their faith and other different cultures. The negative impression and attitude from the western culture, as well as their own people, makes their cultural traditions weak and less than perfect in relation to the rest of the world. This adverse attitude is prevalent in some areas of Samoa as well as the Samoan community in the United States, where the influence of western culture is predominant. Truly, when two or more cultures interact, the balance of the scale tends to swing to the values of the stronger and dominant culture. The inferior culture will adopt the values of the predominant culture. This is the situation with the Samoan Christians in Samoa, as well as those who are living in the United States. This issue has been with the Samoan Christians from the time when the first Christian missionaries landed on the shores of the Samoan islands. This situation has not confined its unfortunate impact to Samoan culture alone, but has affected other cultures as well. The author believes that there is no wrongdoing in adopting values from another culture. However, there is a real problem and danger when cultural values and heritage are lost. Then persons are unable to contribute to society and to find meaning as part of a community of faith. Hence, this project attempts to relate some of the Samoan values and traditions that express the concept of relationship in relation to process theology. The hope is that this small project will assist other Samoan writers, as well as those who find the sacredness of cultural relationship to be an expression of their faith and the Divine."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131849633824768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:02.293Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:46:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0ca2ac2e-10b3-413e-916e-df4ad3ff5ff8","accessControl_ssim":["675b2196-008f-419c-bc8d-4f9a5465b4b5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A project to lead a multi-cultured core group to develop a strategy for reaching people from varied ethnicities, cultures, generations, sub-cultures and socio-economic classes among the global community of Lubbock, Texas"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:28:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e551511f-58a4-475c-b825-62490034c2b3"],"hasLease_ssim":["e7ea1378-ac8a-4aa1-bd7d-789ccfd6c71f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leroy Gainey"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larry J Jones"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Apostolate (Christian theology)","Evangelistic work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project was a response to Christ's call to make disciples of all peoples. The group, which was comprised of Christians from sixteen distinct cultures, sought to identify as many people groups as could be found, and to locate their places of activity. The ministerial relationship is identified as the locus of these difficulties and as the essential tool of the trade in ministry. Relational patterns in the interactions of misconducting predecessors are shown to generate a process by which the integrity of ministerial relationships deteriorates rendering subsequent ministries predictably difficult. Drawing on relational theory and studies of effective ministers, a model of relational competence is constructed and an ethical standard articulated.
