Qualitative data was gathered in group study of the text and in personal interviews with participants. While testing a survey to assess the propensity, the author discovered that pastor-size churches were answering like program-size churches.  The quantitative project gave way to qualitative analysis. A research survey was conducted with six organizing pastors of congregations started by the MAC within the last fifteen years.  The survey focused upon congregational perceptions and in particular what was important and driving the congregations at their inception. Spirituality is the process of being related to and affected by the Spirit.  The Spirituality Assessment Inventory (SAI) was used to measure spirituality.  A series of sermons emphasizing the disciplines of Bible reading, prayer, fasting, worship, ministry, a rule of life, and spiritual formation were delivered.  Small groups were convened and qualitative data was gathered. Small congregations experience these times intensely because of their fewer resources. A survey of Unitarian Universalist congregations of less than 100 members was conducted about how their endowments were managed considering  identity and context. Generally, these congregations were in trouble with declining memberships, inaction toward changes in community context, and poor endowment management. Endowments were managed mostly independent of any sense of congregational narratives-the expressions of the congregations' identities and purposes. The decisions that a church makes are rooted in this identity. Any exploration of church identity begins with an examination of how people understand the nature and mission of the local church. This thesis will explore how the act of preaching plays a vital role in the development of a church's identity, both individually and collectively. This narrative study tells the story of the work of a visioning ministry group in the days prior to and during the 2006 Synod. The strategy utilized a qualitive research method and included revisions to the new member class and the recruiting and training of shepherd's partners, who helped new members through the initial phase of assimilation in the following areas: completion of the new member class, development of relationships, engagement in ministry opportunities, and receiving information that fosters their spiritual growth. For consistent improvement to occur, there must be a plan for evaluation.  In many areas of life it is possible to take personal inventory and evaluate oneself.  Why not practice the same discipline in preaching?  Improvement implies a standard.  The author has concluded that the standard of preaching is made up of three essential elements.  These elements are the content of the sermon, its ability to connect with the listeners, and spiritual life.  A good sermon must proclaim the truth of Scripture, be relevant to those who hear it, and become a supernatural event.  The author then questioned a group of pastors concerning their efforts for improvement.  Fourteen of these pastors volunteered to participate in a six-week project for improvement through self-analysis.  Only three of the volunteers actually participated. The author explains and analyszes the results of the survey and the experiences of those who did the personal review.
