The author argues that in order for nurses to deliver comprehensive, holistic care of persons with cancer, nurse educators must modify their curricula and clinical training programs. She urges educators to include a historical perspective of who nurses have been throughout the history of the Christian church, encourage spiritual self-exploration and training in their students, and reclaim the work of the forerunner of spiritual care in nursing, Florence Nightingale. Osvath, who is a working artist and an ordained minister, participated in and studied the Artist-in-Residency program at Wesley Theological Seminary, where this residency program fulfilled a significant role in the life of the seminary community. In his thesis, Osvath creates a framework and practical guide for churches to establish Artist-in-Residency programs and invites the community to enrich their life, faith, and theology by engaging in a collective, collaborative creative act. He provides a brief biblical and theological foundation, focusing on the Protestant viewpoint on creativity and art in connection with worship and liturgy. He offers a program proposal that can be implemented in various church contexts or settings. She surveyed and adapted classic ars moriendi literature (Johannes Geiler von Kaysersberg, Martin Luther, Jeremy Taylor) and the views of contemporary theologians speaking to the issues of dying and death.
