Government policies in some states in northern Nigeria are tilted to favor Muslims. The enforcement of the sharia legal system in twelve northern states in Nigeria has marginalized the Christians and made the mission and evangelism of the Church difficult. The innovation by the Wusasa Diocese to reach out using techniques like personal evangelism, discipleship, dialogue, education and poverty alleviation programmes are yielding results. Muslims are coming to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Dialogue has helped to minimize violence and has promoted mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims. The hypothesis was that through preaching people can become empowered to participate in social change.  A focus group was formed within the congregation using a pretest and a posttest to test the validity of the hypothesis.  The results of the model revealed that preaching did empower people to become involved in social ministry. It is difficult enough for a local church pastor to create emotional connections in preaching. Those connections become more difficult if the preacher does not know the congregation, but is a judicatory official or other outsider related to the congregation through ecclesiastical structure. Therefore, a clear understanding of the pastoral role and responsibility are central to congregational health and stability. The method of research was a qualitative research. In 2005, six interviews were conducted, each with a staff person responsible for family ministry in a large evangelical church. Implementation of family ministries varied due to the churches makeup and vision. All staff persons mentioned their focus is on preventing family problems rather than solving them through counseling.
