A class was created to accomplish this purpose. The Christian preachers were taught how to construct expository messages. The importance of good sermon delivery was stressed. The preachers were instructed to read the text aloud expressively, use voice, body, and eyes appropriately, and communicate passionately. Finally, the students were trained to evaluate messages for accuracy, clarity, interest, and relevance. Ministries that could last several years end up lasting just a few years due to unmet expectations and the inability to resolve conflict.  In this work, the author contends that long-term ministry is valuable.  Ministries lasting ten years or more are normally based on mutual trust between pastor and congregation.  The depth of relationship brings trust and stability to a church unknown in shorter pastorates. The literature supports this in both religious and secular fields.  Those entering ministry need to be well prepared for the rigors of relationship building, making themselves vulnerable and open, while still maintaining a level of trust and professionalism. The Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches is comprised of over 500 churches and is benefiting greatly from the dedicated service of pastors who are daring to pay the price of long-term service.  Their insights were a primary source of research in determining what relational factors are paramount in the building of a marathon ministry.  Consulted also were the executive and regional ministers who from their perspectives add much as they consult with search committees, pastors, and congregations in crisis.  They serve on the front lines of ministry and understand well the pressures that go along with building a significant relational ministry.  Several theological themes were discussed under the heading of the struggle between the sin-led life and the Spirit-led life.  Such subjects as submission, partnership, and shepherding were viewed through these lenses. This aided greatly in discerning the primary issues facing churches and pastors as they pursue significant ministry together. Yet every year in every denomination, another minister leaves the ministry due to moral failure or burnout.  The purpose of this thesis is to explore the controllable factors which effect longevity in ministry.  Through a combination of research including a biblical/theological and literature review as well as survey research, statistical analysis and descriptive research, this thesis proposes that there are certain controllable factors which, when implemented, make leaving ministry less likely.  The result of this thesis/project was the production of a document entitled 'Ministry for Life' which contains the information gathered from the research listed above. La estrategia consiste en llevar a la congregación a responder a la pregunta, Para qué estoy acá en la tierra y en base a los cinco propósitos del programa y en función de grupos pequeños, arribar a una respuesta que produzca crecimiento en la vida de los creyentes y mayor asistencia a la iglesia local. El presente trabajo de investigación busca evaluar la efectividad del programa en tres iglesias de Lima, Perú. La hipótesis es: 'El programa de 40 Días con Propósito tiene una aplicación limitada con resultados distintos, dependiendo de la preparación, contexto y disposición los líderes involucrados. Además, los resultados de dicho programa no son permanentes sino que la mayoría de las personas llegan a la iglesia pero no permanecen más de un año a menos que se cuente un buen programa de discipulado.' Este trabajo utilizará diferentes instrumentos de medición. Estos instrumentos están en forma de encuestas y entrevistas personales. La conclusión a la que se ha llegado como resultado de la investigación, valida significativamente la hipótesis planteada. The time parameter was May 6, 2001 until October 7, 2001.  Biblical research focused on the prayers of Abraham (Gen 18:22-33), Moses (Exod 32:11-14), Paul (Phil 1:3-8), and Jesus (John 17:1-26).  Contemporary studies were explored, which addressed the scientific experimentation concerning the relationship of prayer and therapeutic medical treatment.  Research methods included survey instruments at the beginning and end of the project along with two focus groups for evaluation. The enhancement of computer-based software and improvements in microcomputers and operating systems is enabling the design and development of a wide range of multimedia education compact disc (CD) products.  I will use this technology to create an interactive tool that supplements classroom lessons and the individual reading of the textbook Biblical Preaching. Because students have different perceptual strengths, information on the CD-ROM will be presented in a variety of formats.  The exercises will incorporate the use of audio and video, as well as written text to accommodate the different ways that people process information. My philosophy in regards to the interactive CD-ROM is that learners should be able to approach learning in a way that takes account of their own learning needs and learning style.
