The answer was discovered through organizational research and interviews of leaders within thirteen parachurch organizations. Eight key lessons were identified: (1) The board is responsible for leadership transition. (2) Transition requires a well-articulated vision. (3) Transition must be an ongoing process at all levels of the organization. (4) Transition takes time. (5) The new leader's job description and profile must be developed. (6) The process must be well-defined. (7) Determine the role of the former CEO within the organization. (8) The respective functions of the board and the new CEO must be defined. Culture change can occur over time with theological focus, personal security, and the application of frames thinking. Leaders learned the proposed model of culture change and chose to implement it in their groups. Students were surveyed before and after the project to measure changes in the group's culture. These leaders are confronted by two problems regarding the lack of inclusivity and sensitivity evident in their church's curriculum and training in hermeneutics, which this project will address.  The author intends to write and implement a ten-week curriculum to train African American small group leaders in hermeneutics during a discipleship course entitled, Hermeneutics for Growth Group Leaders. By pre and post testing the author measures a baseline of both help received and the knowledge gained about the healthy Christian grief process. The methods used for the study are literary and historical research,surveys and interviews. Chapter 1 of this study introduces the project.  Chapter 2 provides a biblical foundation by examining specific prays of Abraham, Jonah and Nehemiah from the Old Testament, and the instructions on pray by Jesus and Paul in the New Testament;a further theological study in this chapter considers the impact such a ministry may have upon a church. Chapter 3 examines the visible needs for a prayer ministry, the obstacles to such a ministry, the kinds of prayer needed in such a ministry, the steps for starting such a ministry, and the historical role of such a ministry in American revivals. Chapter 4 gives the steps taken to implement this project, and chapter 5 gives an evaluation, conclusion and future recommendations concerning this project. It contends that examining the preaching of the first three centuries can assist the current preacher.  It further asserts that the preaching of the early church was more 'poetic' in nature and that by adopting a more poetic style we will be better equipped to preach in a pluralistic, post-modern environment and recapture a genre of biblical literature that has been neglected in the field of homiletics. Sermons guide worshippers to a safe place where God's transformational power is encountered and change, that may be ritually affirmed, occurs. Eight sermons enabled one congregation to discern that which it considered sacred. Physical and liminal spaces within church and home were named and claimed as sacred, most notably a newly constructed annex became a sacred precinct. Mentoring, or life-into-life ministry, is the most intense form of community and therefore holds potential to stimulate the most intense spirituality. In a survey of current literature, this study noted the dramatic explosion of mentoring into the everyday life of our culture.  The current relevance and effectiveness of the biblical, historical, and current insights on mentoring were tested among seminary students and women's lay ministries and a paradigm for mentoring was constructed from the results. The author used narrative process to design and teach a course on interfaith dialogue. Narrative process helped students enter a dialogue that moved beyond the theoretical, to include the experience of 'lived' faith.
