John Wesley and his theology of the Holy Spirit was instrumental in developing the Methodist movement and offers assistance to churches today.  By emulating Wesley's use of sermons, leadership training and study groups, the author has applied Wesley's lessons and theology to a small church preparing to adapt to ministry as a mid-size church. Research agencies such as the Search Institute have rated Lutherans lowest in the areas of faith maturity and growth in faith maturity among Protestant denominations.  Such studies indicate a lack of integration of faith understanding into holy living.  The author's thesis utilizes Martin Luther's formative approach to the catechism and Adrian van Kaam's formation science to facilitate the integration of belief and faith practice for Lutherans as well as other faith traditions.  The author has designed a six-week course to put this thesis into practice. The long term healing responses to stress and burnout presented are preventive care, a retreat based Sabbath rest mininstry, and clergy spiritual support groups. Mircea Eliade, Victor Turner and Paul Ricoeur provide the theoretical framework for congregational change, tested through direct observation, congergational focus groups, a survey, and interviews. Findings indicated that metanarratives are effective vehicles for conveying and shaping the church's values and identity, serving a corrective and evaluative function, renewing and healing. The paper gives a rational for and describes the steps taken to develop five small groups in the congregation which are called missional covenant groups.  Covenant groups consist of approximately eight to ten people of various ages and life experiences from the community and the congregation.  Covenant groups seek to fulfill the church's mission of transforming people's lives through Jesus Christ. Ch. 1 introduces the purpose, goals, background and rationale for the project. Ch. 2 investigates the biblical foundations for mentoring, dealing with two Old Testament passages and several New Testament passages examining Paul as a mentor and Jesus as the ideal mentor. Ch. 3 explores historical as well as contemporary models of mentoring. Particular attention is given to the various components of mentoring, levels of mentoring relationships, as well as how mentoring is utilized today inside both religious and secular spheres. Ch. 4 describes each step in the process of implementing the mentoring ministry within a local church.
