The project director designed and implemented a three-part sermon series and seven-part training course to increase knowledge in the principles and practices of servant leadership.  Participants answered identical pre- and post-course questionnaires and a class assessment form.  Both reading and evaluation teams of educators analyzed the responses. This project rests on the foundations of biblical and historical support for short-term mission experiences, as well as insights from the fields of communication, education, and psychology. The short-term mission training modeled reports on one such experience with a group from First Baptist Church, Springtown, Texas traveling to Saltillo, Mexico. The personal experiences of participants and evaluations by selected ministers provided data for evaluation. The particular subjects under investigation are 24 affluent American University students who chose to participate in an 'alternative spring break' to Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, Chiapas Mexico, Zambia or Vietnam. Relying on interviews and observation, the author concluded that these short impressions provided the students with an occasion for reexamination of their own lives and an opportunity for experiencing transcendence. This practice has roots in our denominational history, but is not widely practiced in our chucrhes today. The practice of testimony strengthened lay leadership, fostered more intimate community and transformed the congregational culture. This practice led us to be more aware of other practices of the faith. It revitalized worship, and prompted changes in our liturgical life as well. It was also designed to provide a forum and to create an atmosphere in which Christian characteristics could be incorporated into Christian lives.  The project was conducted in the church through twenty-four sermons on Christian character development and character traits found in biblical personalities.  A study group composed of an inter-generational cross section of the congregation participated in twelve studies and three in-home fellowship meetings.
