These patterns are examined in the light of Biblical/theological reflection, as well as psychosocial dynamics that likely affect a member's 'sense of belonging.'  A review of spiritual renewal movements in the development of the Christian faith provides historical antecedents for the formation of a theology of discipleship mentoring ministry. Hundreds of teenagers were surveyed in an attempt to clarify the aspects of preaching that they find most effective. The research concludes that teenagers are extremely interested in the content and delivery of sermons, preached in the context of the communal worship service in the local church. With record numbers of men entering their mid-life years, the Church is facing a new challenge as a large number of its ministers are facing mid-life transition. This paper, 'The Effects of Mid-life Transition on a Man's Call to the Ministry,' examined the relationship between a man's mid-life transition and his earlier calling from God to the vocational ministry. The following questions served as the basis of the research: 1. What is mid-life transition in men? 2. What biblical and theological perspectives on calling are relevant to understanding the developmental effects of mid-life transition on the minister? 3. What impact does mid-life transition have upon a minister's sense of calling and ministerial identity? 4. What can be done to prepare and support men in ministry during their mid-life transitions? This study reviewed the pertinent literature on men and mid-life transition from secular and Christian perspectives with a concluding focus on men in vocational ministry. The theological framework of the relationship between one's calling and mid-life transition and the biblical, theological, and historical aspects of calling, ministry, and mid-life were examined. The methodology used for the exploratory study in interviewing ministers revealed several important themes which emerged: calling does not guarantee vocational clarity in mid-life, mid-life affects a man's understanding of his calling, community support affects calling, God is not necessarily an enemy during mid-life, and the important role of the spouse during mid-life. She shows how the Enneagram can be a useful tool for understanding how to preach to a diverse congregation and claims that preachers need to move beyond their own personality type and responses in order to be faithful in proclaiming the Gospel, particularly if they are the primary preaching voice in the congregation. The author preached for two years in a congregation where the relational system of evil worked to weaken the preacher's relationship with the congregation and the unity of the congregation. Various styles of preaching were employed by the preacher. The topic of evil was directly addressed in sermons. The author measured the results by polling listeners anonymously, interviewing specific listeners and discerning if the congregation was living out its faith during that time. Beginning at the point when professional intervention is sought, the author reviews ten years of pastoral activities, expectations, and ultimate feelings of total frustration that eventually led back to a healthy personal and ministerial life.  The primary thrust in this work is the need for emotional/psychological self-knowledge as a gauge of personality characteristics.  Once identified and integrated into the vocational demands, one becomes more effective at choosing or amending those ministerial tasks that are better suited for the personality of the individual pastor. The paper attempts to answer three questions regarding the criteria used in the selection of worship in the local church. This project evaluates worship from its theological roots, confessionals and a survey done in 2001 of ABC/USA churches. The legitimacy of humor from a theological standpoint is examined and established. Further, the value of humor as a tool in communication is explored and explained. A theological rationale for humor in preaching is provided in this thesis. Humor's use in preaching is validated by its presence in creation, in redemption, in revelation, and in the incarnation. Particular attention is given to the existence of  humor in the scriptures, and most notably, to Jesus' frequent use of humor in his teaching ministry. This study deals with understanding the basic essence of humor. The nature of what makes something funny is investigated. Also, the beneficial effects of humor, in life generally, and in communication specifically, are thoroughly considered. This project also offers information about how humor can be used appropriately in preaching. Suggestions on developing a humorous disposition and discovering humorous material are included. In addition, instructions on the delivery of humor are offered. A description of the dangers associated with the use of humor in preaching is also addressed in some detail. Through data gathered in surveys and focus groups, correlated to current biblical, theological and economic thought, I outline what the gospel has to say and how the gospel might be preached in a culture of affluence so that people are receptive to hearing the message. It begins by identifying the problem of preachers being ill-equipped and under-prepared for the task of preaching by their formal theological education.  More specifically, classical theological education addresses preaching to specific target audiences on only a limited basis.  The perspective of this project is that specifically focused preaching enhances the effectiveness of communication.  In addition, little has been written and taught regarding preaching to older adults, as opposed to younger generations.  Preaching must address the reality that the population of the United States is growing older.  This thesis addresses ways to communicate biblical truths to aging adults more effectively.  It surveys contemporary literature which addresses issues relevant to the elderly. The project also includes a self-study for preachers who preach regularly, exploring specific themes for preaching, unique characteristics of older adults, ways in which the Bible addresses particular issues faced by older adults, and ways in which preachers can use more inclusive language in the wording of the sermon.
