Christopher"],"publisher_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Hermeneutics","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["How does one interpret scripture through 'the faith of the historic church expressed in the ancient creeds and reclaimed in the basic insights of the Protestant Reformers?' (Preamble to the Constitution of the United Church of Christ) I show that scholars in the field of hermeneutics are seeing the need to interpret from a tradition. I give an overview of the Post Critical Retrieval Movement. I illustrate how five texts have been interpreted through tradition in the field of spiritual direction. I introduce an Evangelical and Catholic tradition. I give an introduction to how Augustine, Chrysostoom, Bernard, Calvin and Barth interpret scripture. I glean twelve common hermeneutical insights from these five interpreters. I explain my own 'pre-understandings' for interpreting scripture. In two case studies I show how interpreting through this tradition differs from how one would interpret using only the historical-critical method. From this collective and interactive configuration a critical discrimen was created as a heuristic device to analyze contemporary hermeneutical and homiletical traditions to reveal which concepts might be appropriated and the limitations of those traditions in constructing an inclusive, emancipatory (Ana)baptist homiletic of community. This project begins with a survey of biblical and professional literature regarding the subject of vocational ministry mentoring.  Special emphasis has been placed upon literature that addresses the cultural issues that one may face while ministering in the North American Chinese church context.  The centerpiece of this project revolves around two case studies of Chinese churches that are presently sponsoring and hosting vocational ministry internships. Once case study was conducted at the West Houston (Houston, Tex) Chinese Church and the second involving two churches with a cooperative internship program--the Chinese Bible Church of Maryland (Rockville, Md), and the Chinese Christian Church of Greater Washington, DC (Silver Spring, Md). However, the metaphors of the first four centuries have dominated. These metaphors reflect patriarchal, priestly and platonic worldviews, which are being challenged in this post-modern era. These metaphors also fail to reflect the diverse imagery and thought of the Bible. Alternative metaphors are widely used in scholarship. Yet, worship, traditional or contemporary in style, continues to be shaped by these anachronistic and partial metaphors for Jesus. The consultant assists local pastors in Lancaster, South Carolina, to develop a team ministry approach within each fellowship. Chapter 2 shows a biblical basis for a team ministry. This chapter builds upon the Old Testament ministry of Elijah, Moses, Jethro, and the New Testament teachings of Jesus and the Apostle Paul. Chapter 3 is based upon team development as it is developed in the business world. Attention is given to how the business world succeeds in the development of teams. Chapter 4 is the consultant's project for helping pastors develop a team ministry within their congregations. 'A Path for Team Development' was created by the consultant to accomplish this task. Chapter 5 concludes with an analysis of the project. this chapter is an evaluation of the successes and failures for each church in the study.
