The instrument was designed and field-tested with five UTS instructors during the 1999 spring and fall semesters, involving six student video projects. Results of the model were examined via personal interviews. GROUP used Gathering, Resources, Opportunities, Understandings, and Participants as key ingredients in eradicating the damaging effects of racism on African American males between the ages of 15 and 19. The research was done at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois. Religious belief systems of African Americans informed the process. Olive C.M.E. Church, Orlando, FL, was a program designed to respond to the problem of the diminishing number of youth and young adults in the CME church. A group of twelve diverse participants received mentoring, tutoring, and empowering throughout the project. Seven mentors, training classes, a twelve-weeks Rites of Passage program, and a graduation celebration was done. Pre- and post-test questionnaires were used. This study of pre- and post-residents in treatment for substance abuse was evaluated through qualitative analysis. The results show that participants and community residents alike were empowered and transformed during the implementation of the ministry model. The field study revealed that spirituality is a significant factor in the recovery process toward healing and wholeness. The church implemented a leadership program to teach youth how to manage a media ministry. Youth were taught by multi-media specialists principles of pre-production, production, post-production, and promotion. Using a questionnaire for pre- and post-test, levels of self-esteem were measured. Results show that media ministry activities contribute to the maintenance of youth's positive self-esteem. Further results show support for the thesis that the youth of today can contribute greatly to the local church. In an eight-week study, participants explored materials in the following areas: (1) conflict types and conflict recognition, (2) biblical conflict resolution, (3) understanding one's conflict management style, (4) forgiveness and reconciliation, (5) communication: listening and assertion skills, (6) conflict coaching, (7) mediation, and (8) a mediation case study. The curriculum included information gathered through research as well as practical learning experiences. Practical experiences included a conflict inventory to help participants to understand better their preferred style of conflict management; role play to help participants practice listening and assertion skills and to recognize signs and levels of conflict; and case studies to provide learners with practical experience in utilizing conflict management concepts. The initial research and review was accomplished through interviews and pastoral as well as church input, and through biblical study and insight, the need for additional training was evident. As a result of this investigation, the conclusion was reached that the project leader would develop a six-month deacon leadership model. In summary, the goal of this project to assist prospective deacons in discovering their true ministerial calling was reached.
