A high rate of pastoral turnover and geographic isolation necessitate the training of lay preachers to meet this need.  Lay preachers can be effective if they understand the communication patterns of the traditional/oral listeners who occupy these pews.  This project equipped a group of laymen from a large urban church to preach in the small rural churches of Oklahoma.  The laymen were trained to understand and appreciate biblical narrative.  they learned basic storytelling skills.  They worked to construct and deliver sermons that respected the traditional/oral communication keys of stories, relationships, and proverbial sayings. The case study methodology incorporated questionnaires to determine prayer habits and ministry possibilities. Documentation included observations of members at prayer and personal testimonies about answers to prayers. Willing residents in a designated nursing home and volunteers from local congregations met individually as partners and in small group gatherings within the institution in order to provide spiritual companionship and spiritual well being for the residents. Storytelling based on the Christian scriptures, affirmed one's value, enlightened one's understanding of God's presence in daily life, and fostered friendships. Eight congregation members were enlisted to participate in the Community Cultivation training. The project included four weeks of discipleship and training related to biblical principles on prayer, servanthood, and evangelism.  This training period was followed by six weeks of Community Cultivation activity in the neighborhood.
