Contemporary Christian loss of mythic, metaphorical thought patterns in favor of literal, rationalistic ways of thinking threatens the survival of the people of God and divests the Scriptures of their power to transform. The project uses secular story and biblical story in a 'sandwich' technique borrowed from the Gospel of Mark in order to restore an imaginative, metaphorical perspective to Christian consciousness so that biblical narrative can be reclaimed as story. Based on the history of race relations and civil rights in Birmingham as well as the history of the two congregations, the project demonstrates that in relations between congregations each needs to learn about the other in order to find understanding, acceptance, cooperation, and sharing.
