Using theologies on death and dying, Christian practices, as well as current books, journals, and first hand experiences, the project presents ways in which conversations on end-of-life are happening in society and in our faith communities. It also presents the deep need for these conversations to continue to take place and how we can support our faith leaders in having these conversations in our faith communities. The project proposes a workshop as a resource to help faith leaders and faith communities have general conversations on death and dying. The workshop is designed based on specific responses to surveys given to faith leaders in the Pennsylvania Southeast and Pennsylvania Northeast conferences of the United Church of Christ; interviews with 10 of these faith leaders and surveys to 5 congregations in this region. In those surveys, faith leaders identified what conversations on death and dying they have within their faith communities and also their desired resources and elements for a workshop for education in end-of-life issues and death and dying. The faith community members identified what conversations they have had in faith communities on death and dying and what information would be beneficial in future resources to support faith leaders in having conversations on end-of-life planning in their faith communities. Project"],"creator_tesim":["Bettivia, Nicole"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal","Intergenerational relations","Church work with adults"],"abstract_tesim":["This project seeks to shed light on persons who are of the Millennial generation (born between 1981 and 1996) who are actively engaged in a traditional Christian Congregation. Focusing on congregations of the United Church of Christ in Wisconsin, I used surveys and interviews to study pairs of siblings where one sibling is active in congregation and the other is not. By analyzing the differences between siblings in life situations, personal experiences, and spiritual engagement, the wider church can achieve a better understanding of the Millennial generation and why some of them have chosen to participate in the church while others have not. Differences between siblings found to be significant include the religious level of spouses, self-identity as a person of faith, and LGBTQ+ identity. Surprisingly, my data suggests that Millennial siblings who identify LGBTQ+ are more likely to be actively involved in a church than their straight-identifying sibling. Hearing the voices of these Millennials directly provides perspective and understanding that the church is often missing in the conversations about this generation. Project"],"creator_tesim":["Fees, Sandra Ruth"],"subject_tesim":["Social justice","Unitarian Universalist Churches","Preaching"],"abstract_tesim":["“Metaphor as Muse: How Preaching Incarnates the Religious Ethos” is a rhetorical analysis of metaphors used in preaching that is designed to reveal the trajectory of Unitarian Universalist values. The study, grounded in linguistics and language theory, examines fifty contemporary and denominationally significant sermons delivered over a ten-year period. The findings reveal that the sermon metaphors reflect the faith’s basic values, but they do so in ways that are conflictual. The metaphors are less prevalent, more commonplace, and more narrowly interpreted than might be expected in Unitarian Universalist preaching. In addition, the project highlights the impact of their health initiatives on the well-being of the congregants and members of the community served by the local church. Results of this project will help to define the most effective strategies for clergy in the promotion of health wellness interventions and to engage in the conversation of healthcare access and healthcare equity in their communities. The findings of this study will be presented to the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the AME Church through the Health Commission. One significant response to suffering in the last 300 years has been the formation of three utopian communities: Shakers (Ann Lee), Oneida Community (John Humphrey Noyes) and Ephrata Cloister (Conrad Beissel). To understand theologically how these communities dealt with suffering, the theology of the late German liberation theologian, Dorothee Soelle is utilized. Though unaware at the time, utopian leaders lived out Soelle’s theology of suffering and her response to it, and its communal dimension. In this context, resurrection and the providence of God are addressed through a series of select questions and answers posed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Subjects such as the beginning of the universe, divine governance, original sin, resurrection and new creation are held in juxtaposition with scientific theories of Big Bang cosmology, thermodynamics, death of the universe, and evolution. Using insights and approaches from feminist, womanist, and other liberation theologians, it also strives to remember Jesus more clearly in his economic, political, and religious context. At the heart of this theological reconstruction is the conviction that Jesus offers salvation by making God’s “shalom justice” real on the earth through the entirety of his ministry, death, and resurrection. Each aspect of Jesus’ life, including the cross, demonstrates God’s ultimate solidarity with those who are oppressed and violated, as well as God’s capacity to bring forth healing and life out of suffering and death. This salvation is not only individual but lived out in communities which join in God’s work in the world. Seven clergypersons were interviewed, and nine clergypersons completed the clergy survey. Two of the nine surveys were from Spanish-speaking pastors and these surveys were translated into English. Forty-four LGBTQ lay people completed the lay survey. One of the lay surveys was from a Spanish-speaking individual and it was translated into English. A word analysis was performed on the interviews and the surveys to identify frequently used terms related to strategies of pastoral care. The report combines information on the challenges and celebrations and strategies to fulfill the pastoral care needs as indicated by the survey and interview participants. This project is intended to help today’s churches unravel and decode the complex reality in which these young adults live. If successful, this project will have done this in three different ways. First, the study will offer a theological way of bridging the gap between the world of Millennials and the knowledge of such in the church. The study will do that through the use of a tool of a four-week Biblical study of the book of Luke. Second, the study will offer a practical way of decoding the world of Millenials by offering four pointed essays examining the world in which Millennials live. Spiritual warfare is often defined by its practitioners as a conflict between God and the heavenly host against Satan and his malevolent forces of evil for the souls of people. According to many Christian traditions, the Bible states that Jesus has given the church authority and power to employ spiritual warfare practices like prayer, laying on of hands, anointing with oil, or exorcisms.
