The research question addressed in this paper is: To what extent will the reincorporation of traditional Brethren in Christ discipleship practices into the life of the contemporary church produce an increase in spiritual passion? As measured by the Natural Church Development survey, results were not encouraging. However, the change from a closed sect to an open church has brought changes in their understanding of a peace commitment.  This paper focuses on peace as a model of hermeneutics in the church.  The history of the church is investigated to uncover a hermeneutic.  To discover the contemporary understanding of peace, a questionnaire is mailed to 278 Brethren in Christ ministers.  The returns are compared with the historical research.  Results show strong support for a peace commitment with new understandings and applications. Through historical research related to the founding of the BIC Church and to the BIC's theological roots of Anabaptism and Pietism the author identified six foundational beliefs.
