First, this dissertation demonstrates God's preparatory activity in general revelation. The first voyagers to Hawaii had a general knowledge of a supreme being. Second, this dissertation demonstrates God's use of historical events to present special revelation to the Hawaiians through the missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Finally, this dissertation demonstrates the application of research findings toward the writer's present ministry at Puna Baptist Church. These research findings will revitalize Puna Baptist Church's evangelistic strategy. The new evangelistic strategy will utilize the historical fact that the first Hawaiian voyagers had a general knowledge of a later monotheistic supreme being, and this evangelistic strategy will reveal that the religious system was imposed upon the Hawaiians by a foreign entity. Included in this preaching method are the tasks and practices that make up the weekly flow of sermon preparation as well as the structure of sermons and the delivery of those sermons. In this thesis I lay out what happens when a preacher loses his or her way and how a preaching method and careful study can help a preacher to rediscover the importance and heart of the gospel. Most respondents want the gospel told at least once a month; many say it makes their worship experience deeper and presents an opportunity for evangelism. The survey of Washington State congregations will seek to validate the hypothesis that the gospel is understood as in the lordship salvation tradition rather than free grace tradition.  The purpose of the research project is embedded in the question, 'what is the gospel and how is it understood by people in the pews?' In order to test the hypothesis and answer the question, this researcher did the following: developed two separate survey questionnaires, one survey for the pastors of Washington State CBA churches and one survey for the congregants of Washington State CBA churches. The two surveys were then evaluated for areas of agreement and disagreement. The hypothesis was affirmed that the primary theological position held by the congregants and pastors was the lordship salvation understanding of the
